He was a tall man with stooping shoulders, and his noiseless retreat was cautiously made, yet not quite cautiously enough, since Judson's sharp eyes marked the shuffling figure vanishing in the shadow cast by the over-hanging shelter roof of the station. "By cripes! look at that, will you?" he exclaimed, pointing to the retreating figure. "That's Hallock, and he was listening!"
Tiflin snarled but obeyed. Ions jetting from the Earthward hub-ends of the rotating rings, yielded their steady few pounds of thrust. The gradual outward spiral began. "Cripes I'm not sure I can even astrogate to the Moon," Two-and-Two was heard to complain. "I'll check your ionic setting for you, Two-and-Two," Gimp answered him.
"Cripes! that was worth somthin' to glimpse, bet your sweet life, partner," Perk finally observed as he ventured to make a little movement, feeling dreadfully cramped and the danger of discovery growing momentarily less as the first shades of coming evening began to gather around the secluded cove.
"By cripes, we'll tote him out," declared Big Medicine, pushing ahead of Chip in his enthusiasm. "You hold the train, and we'll git 'im. Show us the bunk." The porter pointed out the number and retreated to the steps that he might signal the conductor. The four pushed up through the vestibule and laid hold upon the berth curtains. "Mamma!" ejaculated Weary in a stunned tone.
"'N' by cripes! t' this day nobody but youse knows that Con Teeples dogged 'n' still-hunted th' bush for two weeks for horns 'thout killin' nothin' but a blind buck." One crisp winter morning a party of us left New York to spend the week end at the Lemon County Hunt Club.
He rolled down his trousers' leg, closed his knife and tossed it to Pink for fear he might lose it, examined critically a patch of grass to make sure there were no more cacti hidden there and bawled: "Come on, now, I'll sure give yuh a run for your money this time, by cripes!" and began all over again.
"Cripes put that damn shiv away, Tif!" Art snapped. "Or lose it someplace!" Ramos, who was a part-time mechanic at the same garage where Tiflin worked, couldn't help taunting. "Yeah smoking, too. Oh-oh. Using up precious oxygen. Better quit, pal. Can't do much of that Out There." This was a wrong moment to rib Tiflin. He was in an instant flare. But he ground out the cigarette at once, bitterly.
"No, sir! You ain't going to have One Man coulee unless Andy, here, says he don't want it!" shouted Big Medicine. "I leave it to Chip if Andy hadn't oughta have first pick. He's the feller that's put us onto this, by cripes, and he's the feller that's going to pick his claim first." Chip did not need to sanction that assertion.
"Tell him what yuh want him to do, Weary," he panted, with some difficulty holding his limp victim upright by a greasy coat-collar. "And if he don't fall over himself doin' it, why by cripes we'll take off his shoes!"
"Then what did Pollock Hampton say sell for? By cripes, if this is one of that young hop-o'-my-thumb's jokes, I'm going up to the house an' murder him. That's all. An' right now." Lee laid a hand on Carson's arm. "Hold on, old-timer," he said shortly. "We'll have a talk with him after a while. Now I want to talk with you."
