There is no reference in its pages to Edgar Stillman-Kelley, Miss Gena Branscombe, Louis Adolphe Coerne, Henry Holden Huss, T. Carl Whitmer, Arthur Farwell, Arthur Foote, or A. J. Goodrich. I am unfamiliar with the causes contributing to this book's comparative obscurity; perhaps, indeed, they are similar to those responsible for the early failure of "Sister Carrie."
"I hope, Mr Branscombe, your son is no worse. We should be sorry to lose him. We looked upon him as a promising boy." The gentleman looked hard at the doctor. "You surely say this to spare my feelings. Dr Ponsford. Of course I understand my son can never return here." "Is that so? I am truly sorry." "You would be the last to wish him to return to a school in which his name has been so disgraced."
"So I am," said Branscombe, who to do him justice looked thoroughly worried; "but you know while there's this row on between the two houses I I don't care to go over there without being asked." "I asked you, didn't I?" said Smedley. "You're not afraid of being eaten up, are you? Never mind. I'll brave the wild beasts myself, and let you know how I get on."
"I heard it was he gave her up," says Teddy Luttrel, who has been fighting so hard with a refractory collar up to this that he has not been able to edge in a word. "Oh, I daresay!" says Branscombe, so ironically, that every one concludes it will be useless to say anything further. And now the business of the day is begun.
Many weird stories are told about Bovey House, South Devon, situated near the once notorious smuggling villages of Beer and Branscombe. Upon removing some leads of the roof a secret room was found, furnished with a chair and table. The well here is remarkable, and similar to that at Carisbrooke, with the exception that two people take the place of the donkey!
Branscombe woke once during the interval and asked hoarsely, "What bell was that?" Then, without waiting for an answer, he said, "All right, all right, I'll get up in a second," and relapsed into his restless sleep. Mrs Phillips did not return till eight o'clock; and the doctor arrived almost at the same time. "Has he taken anything?" he inquired. "Scarcely anything; he can hardly swallow."
He approached the bed in the vague hope that Branscombe might be able to help him. But the sufferer, though he opened his eyes, seemed not to know him, and muttered to himself what sounded more like Greek verse than English. In desperation Railsford summoned Mrs Phillips.
Anne Branscombe thinks she is failing, poor old woman, and my Aunt Kezia told her to beat up an egg with a little wine and sugar, and give it to her fasting of a morning: she thinks it a fine thing for keeping up strength. We came round by the Vicarage on our way back, and stepped in to see old Elspie.
See her as she is spoil all. Must have the stage setting, the rouge, costume, position, music. The name too. Amours of actresses. Nell Gwynn, Mrs Bracegirdle, Maud Branscombe. Curtain up. Moonlight silver effulgence. Maiden discovered with pensive bosom. Little sweetheart come and kiss me. Still, I feel. The strength it gives a man. That's the secret of it.
And as I began to show interest she went on to tell me that Branscombe was, oh, such a dear, queer, funny old place! That she had been to other villages and towns Axmouth, and Seaton, and Beer, and to Salcombe Regis and Sidmouth, and once to Exeter; but never, never had she seen a place like Branscombe not one that she liked half so well.
