A music-master from Barchester came over three times a week, and remained for three hours, and if the doctor chose to send his girl over, she could pick up what was going on without doing any harm. So said the Lady Arabella. The doctor with many thanks and with no hesitation, accepted the offer, merely adding, that he had perhaps better settle separately with Signor Cantabili, the music-master.
Caroline broke the seal and read as follows: "If Lady Montfort remembers Arabella Fossett, and will call at Clare Cottage, Vale of Health, Hampstead, at her ladyship's earliest leisure, and ask for Mrs. Crane, some information, not perhaps important to Lady Montfort, but very important to Mr. Darrell, will be given."
"Eleanor Arabella Bowyer," she said, reading it to her mother as they sat in the front basement below the parlor. "Who is she? I've never heard of her." "I don't know, Phillida. I don't seem to remember any Bowyers." "Where is the lady, Sarah?" asked Phillida of the servant. "She is in the parlor, Miss." Phillida rose and went up-stairs. She found awaiting her a woman rather above medium height.
Miss Arabella was too much astonished and abashed to reply; and just at that moment a second object appeared on the woodpile. It arose from the Sawyer orchard like the first, swinging itself up feet foremost in some miraculous fashion. This time it was a girl, larger and more robust than the boy, but plainly younger. Her eyes were wild, her face was bold, and she had a mad mop of bushy black hair.
"If we all caution him against it, he can hardly withstand us all!" said Lady Arabella to herself. The matter was broached to Frank on the Saturday evening, and settled between them all the same night.
So the matter was finally settled by asking every one, irrespective of social position, and when the evening of Miss Arabella's wedding day came around once again everything was in readiness. Elsie Cameron came over in her white bridesmaid's gown, to see how Arabella liked her, and the doctor dropped in to show Martin how to stand up and behave himself, for once in his life.
Arabella inclined her head. 'Mrs. Nathaniel Winkle, who married the son of the old man at Birmingham? said the stranger, eyeing Arabella with visible curiosity. Again Arabella inclined her head, and looked uneasily round, as if uncertain whether to call for assistance. 'I surprise you, I see, ma'am, said the old gentleman. 'Rather, I confess, replied Arabella, wondering more and more.
It was my wish that Mildred should remain, but husband, who is peculiar, wouldn't hear of it, and said she should go where Arabella did, so I've brought them both."
"Say another word of that sort," he whispered, "and I'll kill you here and now! I've everything to gain by it my own death not being the least part. So don't think there's no meaning in what I say!" "What do you want me to do?" gasped Arabella. "Promise never to speak of her." "Very well. I do." "I take your word," he said scornfully as he loosened her. "But what it is worth I can't say."
"I want you to invite Magda to stay with you, please," she informed Lady Arabella abruptly. "Of course I will," she replied. "But why? You've got a reason." Gillian nodded. "Yes," she acknowledged quietly. "I'm going to Paris to find Michael." Lady Arabella, whose high spirits had wilted a little in the face of the double disappointment regarding any answer from Quarrington, beamed satisfaction.
