Here are a couple of remarks that could only have been made in the reign of Frederick the Great, and under the spell of a college lecture: "The statement that man is the noblest work of God was never made by anybody but man, and must therefore be taken 'cum grano salis." "We are told that God said He made man in His own image, but the remark was probably ironical."

There is no more graphic description in his writings than his account of the scene which took place when a new-comer among the beggars had the indiscretion, on receiving his grano, to wish the giver only a hundred years of life; the indignation of the king of the gang at this exhibition of black ingratitude; the tumult with which the blunder was corrected, and the shouts and outcries with which the pitiful hundred was changed into a thousand years, and long ones at that.

It is not only generous but just to take the language in which the writers and orators of a country denounce the evils existing in it cum grano salis, or with considerable allowance for exaggeration.

I am quite of your opinion that your feet are only too delicious. The costume rather disgusted me than otherwise, without, however, producing any effect upon me. To-morrow I shall pay the Duchess de Grano a visit, and since it seems to put you out, shall not return again to Albano. Heaven knows that the pleasure is not great, and that I care very little for it.

Some dolts there be, no doubt, who would detect Anodyne influence in a barrel-organ; A febrifuge in a flat German Band, A prophylactic in a street-piano! Some quackery a man can understand, But Music I'll not take, even cum grano. I don't believe what classic noodles say, That Music stopped the hæmorrhage of ULYSSES; That CATO'S stiffened joints attained free play From harmony of sounds.

To begin with, the mere fact that the 'Practical View' was written by a layman and such a layman! gave it a weight which no book of the kind written by a clergyman could possess. The force of the latter might always be broken by the objection that the writer was swayed by professional bias, and that his arguments, whatever might be their intrinsic merits, must be taken cum grano by the lay mind.

Maybe he knew that newspaper stories should be taken cum grano salis, and then maybe he knew me. There were no more "fake reports" from that office. It was while I was sitting around a barrack-room fire that I picked up the following story.

Most readers may not need a whole pillar, but they will surely take the above professions cum grano salis. It is all in King Cambyses' vein; and I would that we had Pistol to deliver it. I cite it here, not for the graceless task of showing Mr.

"Yes, if tradition be true," said the Pastor, "which, as you know, we must receive cum grano salis. There is a story of a man walling up his woman-servant, because she cooked a cat for his dinner. He had caught a hare, but a dog had stolen it, so she cooked a cat instead. This enraged her master, and he walled her up alive."

Woman ill with terror! Windows smashed. This extraordinary story probably a fabrication. Too good not to print cum grano!" He dropped the paper and stared blankly in front of him. "Probably a fabrication!" He caught up the paper again, and re-read the whole business. "But when does the Tramp come in? Why the deuce was he chasing a tramp?" He sat down abruptly on the surgical bench.
