TIRABOSCHI indeed lived to complete his great national history of Italian literature; but, unhappily for us, WARTON, after feeling his way through the darker ages of our poetry, and just conducting us to a brighter region, in planning the map of the country of which he had only a Pisgah view, expires amid his volumes!

The moment that I consent to this arrangement, you are mine for ever. "'Warton, she said, more seriously than ever, 'I am yours. You have my heart, and I have engaged to give you, when you ask it, this poor hand. In any condition of life I am yours.

This defect has probably been remedied by Mr. Todd's enlargement of the Dictionary. Wooll's Life of Joseph Warton, p. 230. The writers, besides Smart, were Richard Holt, Garrick, and Dr. Percy. Their papers are signed with the initials of their surnames. Johnson's are marked by two asterisks. See Hawkins's Life of Johnson, p.351. Miss Seward's letters, vol. i. p. 117.

He tells Warton that her principles are really shocking. She told him she saw no reason why people should stick to their husbands or wives longer than it pleased them and that in America nobody did! He doesn't wish Mrs. Mountford to see much of her; though, really, my dear, I don't think Mrs. M. is likely to give him trouble do you?

Coates, the monitor, probably had no friend he didn't deserve to have one or he wouldn't have been down on Parson for a thing like that. Bother Warton! bother the doctor! bother Caesar! what did they all want to conspire together for against a wretched junior's peace?

"I shall not change my dress, Mr. Ware." "Don't, Mrs. Morley," he said, with a shudder. "Not that name, if you please," she said, and noting her card on the desk she tore it in two. Then opening her case she tore the other cards and scattered them on the floor. "Mrs. Morley is no more. I am Mrs. Warton. That is the name of my first husband my true husband the father of my three children. Yes, Mr.

"Are you, sir, fatherless?" asked Warton suddenly. I told him, and he continued. "You have felt then the lightning shock that has altered the very face of nature. Earth, before and after that event, is not the same. It never was to human being yet. It cannot be. What a secret is learnt upon that day! How tottering and insecure have become the things of life that seemed so firm and fixed!

Collins was an enthusiastic student of Shakspere, and one of his sweetest poems, the Dirge in Cymbeline, was inspired by the tragedy of Cymbeline. The verse of Gray, Collins, and the Warton brothers abounds in verbal reminiscences of Shakspere; but their genius was not allied to his, being exclusively lyrical and not at all dramatic. The Muse of this romantic school was Fancy rather than Passion.

Pope, repaying praises which he had received, and wishing to extol him to the highest, only styles him 'an elegant and philosophical Poet'; nor are we able to collect any unquestionable proofs that the true characteristics of Thomson's genius as an imaginative poet were perceived, till the elder Warton, almost forty years after the publication of the Seasons, pointed them out by a note in his Essay on the Life and Writings of Pope.

Warton in the eighteenth century was informed that in Sicily priests in confession habitually inquired of herdsmen if they had anything to do with their sows. In Normandy priests are advised to ask similar questions. It is worth noting that in Greek the work choiros means both a sow and a woman's pudenda; in the Acharnians Aristophanes plays on this association at some length.
