Tho' Sir John Denham mentions but six, our author wrote nine Plays in his travels, and two at London, amongst which his Don Thomaso, in two parts, and his Parson's Wedding, will always be valued by good judges, and are the best of his performances. The following is a list of his plays.
By my life, when I heard the news I burst into laughter. "Signor Matteo," said I, "I wish your worship joy of your safe arrival." Thomaso. What? Struzza. You laughed? Hang me if I can see what there is to laugh at. Abellino. Why, surely you are not afraid of receiving what you are so ready to bestow on others? What is your object?
Here we found the waggon and oxen quite safe and were welcomed rapturously by my Zulu driver and the voorlooper, who had made up their minds that we were dead and were thinking of trekking homewards. Here also Thomaso greeted us, though I think that, like the Zulus, he was astonished at our safe return and indeed not over-pleased to see us.
Also it may have occurred to him that in all probability none of us would ever come back at all, in which case by a process of natural devolution, he might find himself the owner of the business and much valuable property. However, he swore by sundry saints for Thomaso was nominally a Catholic that he would look after everything as though it were his own, as no doubt he hoped it might become.
The difference of religion was overlooked by Don Rebiera and the relations by all but the confessor, Father Thomaso, who now began to agitate and fulminate into the ears of the Donna Rebiera all the pains and penalties attending heretical connection, such as excommunication and utter damnation.
Without more words, then, I vote for our remaining as we are, and carrying on our old trade; that will bring us plenty of gold, and enable us to lead a jolly life. Pietrino. Right, lad, you speak my thoughts exactly. Thomaso. We are bravoes, it's true; but what then? We are honest fellows, and the devil take him who dares to say we are not.
Don Philip and Agnes left them, to go to Don Rebiera, and make him acquainted with what had passed, and to ask his advice. When they went into the room, Don Rebiera immediately accosted his son. "Have you heard, Philip, that Friar Thomaso has returned at last? so the servants tell me." "The report may be fortunate," replied Don Philip; "but I have another story to tell you."
Thereon Thomaso, who although he could be insolent, like most crossbreeds was not remarkable for courage, seeing the stir that this announcement created amongst the fierce-faced Zulus and fearing developments, promptly bolted, none attempting to follow him.
Strong stuff to drink; dresses for those women down there, and sometimes pearls, jewels and other things for me which I do not want. I have a box full of them set in ugly gold, or loose which I cannot use, and if I put them on, who is there to see them? That clever half-breed, Thomaso for he is clever in his way, faithful too or the women down there no one else."
My name is Matteo, and I am the father of the band: that sturdy fellow with the red locks is called Baluzzo; he, whose eyes twinkle like a cat's, is Thomaso, an arch-knave, I promise you; 'twas Pietrino whose bones you handled so roughly to- night; and yon thick-lipped Colossus, who stands next to Cinthia, is named Stuzza.
