The Brooklyn and Texas caused wild havoc among the Spanish shore batteries, quickly silencing them. While the larger ships were engaging the heavy batteries, the Suwanee and Vixen closed with the small in-shore battery opposite them, raining rapid-fire shots upon it and quickly placing the battery out of the fight.
Two or three minutes later the Suwanee fired again, and a huge cloud of débris rose from the base of the flagstaff. For a few seconds it was impossible to tell what had been the effect of the shot. Then it was seen that the shell had only added to the ruin of the fort. The flagstaff seemed to have a charmed existence, and the Suwanee only had one charge left.
He'd take that bracket-saw and the mild chloride and his hypodermic, and treat anything from yellow fever to a personal friend. "Besides his other liabilities Doc could play a flute for a minute or two. He was guilty of two tunes 'Dixie' and another one that was mighty close to the 'Suwanee River' you might say one of its tributaries.
From all I can gather it is feared that the Yankees propose an attack on Richmond, now that General Lee is away." "It's strange that Captain Lane and the surgeon don't come down," Roberta remarked. "I truly wish, however, that we had not to meet them again." "Well, since it must be, the sooner the ordeal is over the better," said Suwanee, with increasing irritation.
I drew the faithful sharer of my long voyage near a thicket of prickly-pears, and slept beside it for the last time, never thinking or dreaming that one year later I should approach the mouth of the Suwanee from the west, after a long voyage of twenty-five hundred miles from the bead of the Ohio River, and would again seek shelter on its banks. It was a night of sweet repose.
When the firing ceased, Lieutenant Delehanty of the Suwanee was anxious to finish his work, so he signalled to the New York, asking permission to knock down the Spanish flag. “Yes,” replied Admiral Sampson, “if you can do it in three shots.” The Suwanee then lay about sixteen hundred yards from the old fort. She took her time.
The Vixen and Suwanee were far out on the left flank, watching the riflemen on shore. The Dolphin and Porter did similar duty on the right flank. The line headed by the New York attacked the new earthworks near Morro Castle. The Brooklyn column took up a station opposite the Estrella and Catalina batteries and the new earthworks along the shore. The Spanish batteries remained silent.
Seven miles distant is Key West, the most extreme southern point of United States territory. From the immense light-house pier the distance to the island of Cuba is less than eighteen miles. Returning to the inland, we may spend a few minutes 'Way down 'pon de Suwanee Ribber, Far, far away Dare's wha' my heart is turnin' ebber Dare's wha' de ole folks stay.
Bob could sing the two songs his sister had taught him, and had written out twelve copies of them in order to have a good stock to sell from; but Leander predicted that he would not be able to dispose of many, because one was the "Suwanee River," and the other "A Poor Wayfaring Man," the words of which any boy could get by consulting an old music-book.
The second column was led by the New York, with the New Orleans, Yankee, Iowa, and Oregon in the order named. On the left flank were the Vixen and the Suwanee, and on the right the Dolphin and the Porter kept watchful eyes upon the riflemen ashore. The first column took station opposite the Estrella and Catalina batteries, while the second was stationed off the new earthworks near Morro Castle.
