In many of the cases which have come to my attention in the past many years, the stammerer or stutterer has been afflicted with a malady more difficult to cure than stammering, viz.: The Habit of Procrastination. "Oh, I will wait a little while," says the stammerer. "A little while can't make any difference!"
Any case of stuttering or stammering in the Simple or Elementary Stages may pass into Combined Stammering and Stuttering without warning or without the knowledge, even, of the stammerer or stutterer. One of the first questions asked by the stutterer or stammerer is, "What is the cause of my trouble?"
A stutterer or stammerer almost always experiences difficulty in speaking over the telephone. One experimenter has shown, however, that a stammerer can talk perfectly over the telephone so long as the receiver hook is depressed and there is no connection with another person at the other end of the line.
Let us suppose that society is as indifferent to me as I to it." "There's a little stutterer down at the hotel who claims to be an English lord." "Bah, Strahan! I hope your sword is sharper than your satire. I've had enough of English lords for the present." "Yes, Merwyn, you appear to have had enough of most things, perhaps too much.
There is an axiom in Nature, that "Nothing is static," which, being interpreted, means, that nothing stands still. And this applies with full force to the stutterer or stammerer. If no steps are taken to remedy the malady, he may be very sure that the disorder is getting worse not standing still or remaining the same.
This will explain why the stutterer or stammerer can talk without difficulty to animals or when alone there is no self-consciousness no conscious effort no thinking of what is being done. Another of the peculiarities of stammering is that the stammerer in many cases seems to be able to talk perfectly in concert.
"You're engine's missing, old timer. Let it cool off a bit and then try again." This was evidently heard by the stutterer, for he became excited, and that did not help him much. "S-s-shut up, y-y-you big b-b-boob," he finally managed to get out, in an infuriated tone. "I may be a boob, but I can talk straight, anyway," replied the amateur.
The second point that I should bring out in this connection is as follows: That which is of fundamental importance and of basic significance in the life of the psychoneurotic or the stutterer, that which is the fundamental and essential motive force which controls the psychoneurotic and the stutterer is also true, but in greater or less degree, for all of those who are not within the confines of this group.
When it is remembered that nearly a dozen more or less common speech disorders can be named, almost in one breath, and that some of these disorders may pass through four or five successive stages, it will be seen that an expert diagnosis and report is almost a necessity to the stammerer or stutterer who would have reliable and authoritative information about his speech disorder.
The stutterer looked halfway belligerent; then, as if thinking better of his first desire for a wordy conflict, he passed the tiny object across the table to Max. Both he and Owen examined it by the aid of a strong magnifying glass. "It's a pearl, all right," announced Max, finally. "Oh! joy! joy!" exclaimed Toby, ready to leap to his feet and begin a jig.
