Lewis and Clark discovered here a species of ermine before unknown to science. They called it "a weasel, perfectly white except at the extremity of the tail, which was black." This animal, highly prized on account of its pretty fur, was not scientifically described until as late as 1829. It is a species of stoat.

"Law-daw!" said Cloctaw. "Very important, very!" said the fox. "The sacred laws of property cannot with safety be interfered with." "No intrusion can be thought of for a moment," said the stoat. "Most absurd!" said the jay. "The very point!" said the missel-thrush. "Very clear, indeed!" said the mouse; "I am sure the rat will echo the sentiment."

He remembered a poor stoat which, startled out of its sleep, had turned and bitten one of the iron wheels of the machine, and the wheel had gone over it and crushed it into a mass of blood and fur. He was as furious and as helpless as the stoat had been.

Her soul assured her of it. "To my sister," answered Malcolm, "I will give all the proof she may please to require; to Lord Liftore I will not even repeat my assertion. To him I will give no shadow of proof. I will but cast him out of my house. Stoat, order horses for Lady Bellair." "Gien ye please, sir, my Lord," replied Stoat, "the Lossie Airms horses is ordered a'ready for Lady Clementina."

"Let her not touch you with her evil hands, lest she put her enchantments upon you." Old Elspeth smiled grimly, and showed the one lonely tooth that was in the front of her shrunken gums. "Heed not the child's silly fears," said she to Kenric, "and tell me, for what cause has she been weeping?" "It was a stoat that harried an ouzel's nest and slew the birds," replied Kenric.

Both missed the "stop" by about two yards, though I don't know what would have happened if they had found it. Digging and death in the former case, and battle and blood in the latter, perhaps. But no matter, they passed on their unlawful occasions; and half-an-hour after the going of the stoat the old doe-rabbit came out, and dissolved into the moon-haze.

She waded, floated, swam a little, or, erect, roamed leisurely along the alder fringe, exploring the dim green haunts of frog and water-hen, stoat and bécassine a slim, wet dryad, gliding silently through sun and dappled shadow. Where the stream comes to Sainte Lesse Wood, there is a hill set thick with hazel and clumps of fern, haunted by one roe-deer and numerous rabbits and pheasants.

By the plan now adopted, also, each of these three hunting parties, after they had reached their respective destinations and built their camps, were to explore the rivers ten or fifteen miles upward through the forest, and to some suitable and convenient terminus of their proposed trapping and hunting range; there build a camp, in which to lodge on their outward jaunts; and mark off, on their return, by blazing the trees, lines for setting log-traps for sable, marten, stoat, or ermine, for, whatever may be said to the contrary, the noted ermine of Europe is a native of our northern forests.

How to expel foxes from a covert, for example; and here is another: Is it true that the fox listens for the distressed cries of a rabbit pursued by a stoat and that he will deprive the stoat of his captive? Perhaps; Yes; No, I don't think so, because one hunts by night, the other by day, he will answer, but you see that the question troubles him.

She's an oonsanctifeed brute. I cudna think o' sellin' her like this." "Ow ay! lat them; I dinna objec'; gien only they ken what she's like afore they buy her," rejoined Malcolm. The factor burst out laughing. To his judgment the youth had spoken like an idiot. "We'll not send you to sell," he said. "Stoat shall go with you, and you shall have nothing to do but hold the mare and your own tongue."
