What homes have been made happy by it; what families united in the bonds of love; what sick-beds soothed; what dying beds cheered; what minds illumined, and what hearts filled with joy unspeakable, and full of glory! In close connexion with mission work, we may state the progress made during the present century in leavening the world with the Word of God.

"It is well they allow that I am living yet," was his reply. "Who are the reverend ambassadors?" "The Grand Master of the Templars and the Marquis of Montserrat." "Our brother of France loves not sick-beds," said Richard; "yet, had Philip been ill, I had stood by his couch long since. Jocelyn, lay me the couch more fairly it is tumbled like a stormy sea.

They doubtless thought the English girl was a saint sent down from heaven. The more she felt drawn toward the sick, the more she felt the need of study, and the more she saw the work that refined women could do in the hospitals. The Sisters of Charity were standing by sick-beds; why could there not be Protestant sisters?

How many weary sick-beds, how many cheerless lives, how many lonely, depressed, and silent men and women, might be gladdened, and for the time transformed, by one who would come, not to speak words of cheer and comfort, but to listen to tales of suffering and trial! Here would be one of the truest forms of charity; an almost unknown joy would be given to the world.

Many had not strength to get away from the water, but died in the midst of the stream, and others would drink of it notwithstanding. Such was their weariness of their sick-beds that some would creep forth, and if not strong enough to stand, would die on the ground.

The cry rose everywhere, "John Knox is come!" All the town came rushing into the streets, the old and the young, the lordly and the lowly, were seen mingling and marvelling together, all tasks of duty, and servitude, and pleasure, were forsaken, the sick-beds of the dying were deserted, the priests abandoned their altars and masses, and stood pale and trembling at the doors of their churches, mothers set down their infants on the floors, and ran to inquire what had come to pass, funerals were suspended, and the impious and the guilty stood aghast, as if some dreadful apocalypse had been made; travellers, with the bridles in their hands, lingering in profane discourse with their hosts, suddenly mounted, and speeded into the country with the tidings.

Russell Square was the boundary of her prison: she might walk thither occasionally, but was always back to sleep in her cell at night; to perform cheerless duties; to watch by thankless sick-beds; to suffer the harassment and tyranny of querulous disappointed old age.

C. was placed, as the preeminent member, almost by acclamation; if he began to speak, notwithstanding, to one or two, others drew near, increasing momently, till by-and-bye the sick-beds were deserted, and Mr. C. formed the centre of a large circle.
