In the summer of 1808 there were printed at Ballston-Spa then the resort of fashion and the arena of flirtation seven numbers of a duodecimo bagatelle in prose and verse, entitled "The Literary Picture Gallery and Admonitory Epistles to the Visitors of Ballston-Spa, by Simeon Senex, Esquire."
Being called mad was pretty much the same thing as being mad to a mind of this class: and Alfred had admitted he was called mad. At the next station he implored a silvery-haired old gentleman. Old age, he had heard, has known griefs, and learned pity. The keeper showed the certificates. "Ah!" said Senex; "poor young man. Now don't agitate yourself. It is all for your good. Pray go quietly.
It was briefly explained by Professor Senex that original research could not be successfully accomplished without reference to all the original sources and to the writings of other scholars. The bibliographies ran from ten titles or so to nearly a hundred, according to the nature of the particular research involved.
They saw plainly enough what they wanted to give, but never took the pains to see the donation in its relation to the institution as a whole. The majority report, which was drawn by our famous Latinist, Professor Claudius Senex, concluded with the despairing note Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes. The minority report was delivered orally by young Simpson Smith of the department of banking and finance.
The man who lost his hand was taken; and was tempted by the promise of pardon to reveal his confederates; among whom was one John Senex, esteemed among the richest and best-born citizens in London. Henry's care in administering justice had gained him so great a reputation, that even foreign and distant princes made him arbiter, and submitted their differences to his judgment.
"Ah! the nation that produced 'Le philosophe sans le savoir. And now it has added, 'Le philosophe sans le vouloir, and you have stumbled on him. What a life for an aged man! Fortunatus ille senex qui ludicola vivit. Tantalus handcuffed and glowering over a gambling-table; a hell in a hell." "Oh, Harrington! "Exclamations not allowed in sober argument, Zoe."
Senex, the old man, often says to younger people, "These things you pursue are valueless I too have sought them, later abandoned the search and now see my folly;" not realizing that if his blood were to resume its former chemical character he would return to the quest.
The age of Solon at his death is variously given as 80 or 100 years. VIDEMUS: the Latins frequently use 'we see' for 'we read'. See n. on Lael. 39, also below, 69 ut scriptum video.
