In the jargon of the rocketeer the great missiles were called "beasts" or "birds." The former was because they sometimes acted "beastly." The latter was a tribute to their beautiful flight when they ran true. Rick thought, "How could anyone sabotage a thing like that?" Gee-Gee brought him back to earth. "Ever climb a gantry?" "No, sir." "Well, start flying, young Brant.
So long as the price system rules, that is to say so long as industry is managed on investment for a profit, there is no escaping this necessity of adjusting the processes of industry to the requirements of a remunerative price; and this adjustment can be taken care of only by well-advised acceleration or curtailment of the processes of industry; which answers to the definition of sabotage.
The idea of sabotage is that any dissatisfied workman shall undertake to break the machine or spoil the product of the machines in order to render the conduct of industry unprofitable, if not actually impossible. It may range all the way from machine obstruction or destruction to dynamiting, train wrecking, and arson.
If there were people so keen against this Section, why couldn't they get out of the party and form an organization of their own? "Because," answered Murray, "we prefer sabotage to striking!" "In other words," continued Norwood, "you stay in the local, and by a campaign of sneering and personalities you drive your opponents out!"
Then, I suppose, still another man or group gets rid of it through trade channels." John Gordon had been listening without comment. Now he spoke up. "The pattern seems to indicate sabotage, in order to create a diversion for thieves. I can't buy it." The boys and Preston waited for his reason. "The thefts are peanuts. Oh, not in terms of ordinary thefts.
The fact is that society the big body of us is now menaced by two sets of anarchists. There are those among the poor and the weak who preach arson, dynamite, and sabotage. They are the products of conditions such as existed in Colorado as Bakounin was the product of the conditions in Russia. These, after all, are relatively few, and their power is almost nothing.
"Plenty of that sabotage stuff," growled the Chief. "Hard to catch the so-and-sos. Smash the gyros and the take-off'd have to wait till new ones got made and that's more time for more sabotage." Joe said carefully: "I think it can be licked. Listen a minute, will you?" The Chief fixed his eyes upon him. "The gyros have to be rebalanced," said Joe. "They have to spin on their own center of gravity.
The story is a more sordid one and it has to do with the theft of public lands; with the bribery and corruption of public officials; with the destruction and "sabotage," if the term may be so misused, of the property of competitors; with base treachery and double-dealing among associated employers; and with extortion and coercion of the actual workers in the lumber industry by any and every means from the "robbersary" company stores to the commission of deliberate murder.
And the attempt to smash the entire Platform by getting an atomic bomb into a plane and having a saboteur shoot the crew and then deliver the bomb at the Shed in an officially harmless aircraft.... The common element in all those sabotage tricks was actually clear enough, but Joe wasn't used to thinking in such terms.
The two met only at night, usually at bedtime, because the entire base was working overtime. The work was so absorbing that Rick actually forgot for long periods the reason for his presence on the base. To be sure, he heard much about the mysterious Earthman, but it was all a rehash of the earlier sabotage attempts, mixed with pretty wild speculation.
