"Sit down," said Logan, and as he said it a great knocking began somewhere. Listening in surprise, Petro forgot to accept the invitation which might have been more tempting if he had not, about half an hour ago, finished dinner. Logan repeated the words, however, and even pulled out a chair for Petro, who took it.
And thus it was agreed that Florinda should be made to marry Petro, thinking him to be Carlton. To render all things sure, and that nothing should be overlooked as it regarded necessary precaution, the uncle was to go on and stop at the inn during the afternoon with the priest, and arrange everything properly for the proposed deception.
If the dryad had sold her dress, would the fresia fragrance haunt it still? Petro thought not. The other woman would have given it her own special perfume. Only in the possession of a dryad would it have retained this scent. Winifred Child had been here, then in Logan's dining-room, near Logan's table laid so alluringly for a supper en tête-
The cool, fresh breeze of the morning air, that strengthened as they ascended the mountain, one would think should cool the passions of any creature. Not so with Petro; for the Italian fire of his spirit was up-the dark, deep passions of his nature-and nought but blood could appease their cravings.
In the end the fishermen left their boats and followed Him.
"I do," answered Win and laughed again, the happiest, most surprised, and excited laugh in the world. "Then we've got each other forever!" cried Petro. "And, Father, you and I will have each other, too, after this, as we never had before. You shall bless this day as I do, and as mother will." "All right," said old Peter. "We'll see about that. Anyhow, shake hands." Petro shook.
He drew nearer, bent his knee, and kissed the hand which the Holy Father extended to him, saying, with sweet dignity: "Non mihi, sed Petro." Then Benedetto sat down. The Pope passed him a sheet of paper, and pushed the little lamp nearer to him. "Look," said he. "Do you know that writing?" Benedetto looked and shuddered, and could not check an exclamation of reverent sorrow. "Yes," he replied.
He determined to ascertain if this was the case through his own personal observation; and on the occasion of the delivery of the letter in question, Petro being on the watch, discovered Carlton in the act, and also overheard the following appointment made by him with Florinda: "I will call for an answer at eleven, signora; I hope you may perfectly comprehend my plan and fully acquiesce in it."
Petro was an expert and practical penman, being, as we have said, private secretary to his uncle, Signor Latrezzi; and thus being quite an expert in the use of the pen, he was the more easily able to prosecute his dishonest purpose, Thus he commenced carefully to write a note addressed to Carlton, and purporting to come from Florinda, in answer to his note of that evening.
An ancient easy chair and a queer old sofa still had the original, slippery, black horsehair off which Petro and Ena had slid as children. Petro had named the sofa "the whale," and the squat chair "the seal." Both shiny, slippery, black things really did resemble sea monsters, and had never lost for Petro their mysterious personality.
