He had been much with Florinda from childhood, and he was taught to consider her as his future wife. As to love, he might be said to admire her beauty of person and mind, for none knew better how to appreciate both than Petro; and, taken in connection with his anticipated union with her, he perhaps loved her as the world goes.
For she had climbed the ladder many a time, and had rested her head against the top while she watched Eve and Petro push the pellets of mud from their mouths with their tongues and bunt the wall of their clay nest smooth on the inside with the top of their closed beaks, not stopping even though they brushed their pretty chestnut-colored cheeks against the sticky mud, or got specks on the feathers of their dainty foreheads that bore a mark shaped like a pale new moon.
The hunting flights of Eve and Petro and their comrades lasted about fifteen minutes each time they took a recess from their building. After two days the nest was big enough, so that there was room for both swallows to build at once; and after that, Petro didn't have to fly around with his mouth full of plaster waiting for Eve to go if he chanced to come before she was through.
Eve and Petro, themselves, were happy as any two swallows need be that spring of 1920, when they started forth to seek a cliff, just as their ancestors had done for the hundred years or so since man began to notice their habits, and no man knows for how many hundreds of years before that. Of course they found it as all cliff swallows must, for cliff-hunting is a part of their springtime work.
Carlton paused for a moment, as if to consider what to do; he was amazed and confounded, and his arm sunk by his side. Petro and his uncle drawing together, exchanged a few hasty words, while Carlton stood there mute, as though struck dumb. "We are two to one," whispered Petro, "let us upon him." "Nay, he has a pistol; we have only our swords."
Carlton again permitted him to work thus in his wild fury for some minutes, when at length, by another masterly effort with his weapon, he again disarmed his antagonist, throwing his blade over the heads of the company, and immediately, apparently with the same effort, he wounded Petro in the sword arm with such force and earnestness, that it fell powerless by his side.
"I do not wish to anticipate, Signor Americano, but I must advise thee to prepare for death on the morrow." "True, Signor Petro," said Carlton, earnestly, "neither of us knows what the morrow may bring forth." "Signor," said Petro, now in evident good humor at his anticipated success, "you should have chosen the pistol, to have placed yourself in any possibility on equal terms with me."
The hours flew by as hours only fly along the happy, until the time had nearly arrived for the guests to depart, when Carlton, coolly walking up to Petro, who stood in an exposed situation, said, in a tone not to be mistaken: "Signor Petro, follow me!" "Si, Signor Americano," was the prompt reply.
The creature looked brave and rather sweet, and Miss Rolls was quite sorry for her; but the thing had to be done. "Petro, you go away and let us have a talk," said Petro's kind sister gayly. "Two is company; three's none." And Petro went, thinking Ena the grandest sort of a pal. He had done his best for her already.
"Stand to your defence!" said the enraged Petro, whose blood was now completely up.
