Her candid opinion was that the master had been drinking again and that madame, disgusted at his behavior, had eloped with a tall, handsome stranger who had been seen loitering around the house. Oku scoffed at all this gossip. It was clear as daylight, he said.
And, as we now know, he did, the only men who saw the fighting that later ensued being those who disobeyed his orders and escaped from their keepers. Those who had been ordered by their papers to strictly obey the regulations of the Japanese, and the military attaches, were kept by Oku nearly six miles in the rear. From a photograph by Guy Scull.
So saying, General Oku turned to me and gave me a hearty handshake, an example which was immediately followed by the officers of the staff, while the troops put their caps upon their bayonets and waved them enthusiastically, yelling "Banzai!" until I am sure they must have felt as hoarse as crows.
"That being the case," he continued, "it is my intention to dispatch thither the Akagi, Chokai, Hei-yen, and Tsukushi to afford the assistance required by General Oku; and those ships will be accompanied by a torpedo flotilla, the duty of which will be to take soundings, lay down a line of buoys inside which the ships must not pass, and search for and clear the bay of mines, as well as to render such further assistance as may be possible to the land forces.
Attired himself in a plain business suit, a quick glance at his visitors' dress had already told him that he could dispense with the formality of changing for dinner. Shaking hands with Virginia, he said in his usual hearty fashion: "Well, how are you? I'm so sorry I am late. Oku explained, didn't he?" "Perfectly," smiled Virginia. "He took good care of us."
Pointing to the front door he added: "Tell Oku to bring the things out of the machine." "You're on," grinned the clerk. "And keep your mouth shut," said Stafford in a low tone. "Tight as a clam!" grinned Jimmie. As the millionaire turned to Virginia the young man again interrupted them. "There's just one thing more," he said. "What?" "When do I go back to work?" "Tomorrow," laughed Stafford.
Oku was one of those ideal retainers who, once they have found an attachment, would rather die than betray their trust.
"I will join him at once. Have you any idea what he wants me for?" "I think I can guess," replied my companion, as he fell into step beside me, "but I am sure that the General will prefer to make that known to you himself." I said no more, and a couple of minutes later we halted before the general staff, and Oku took and returned my salute.
Never before had Oku seen his master in such a vicious temper. He had practically kicked him out when he had politely inquired how many would be home for dinner, and all that evening he heard him striding restlessly up and down like a caged lion, raging and fuming, and once it had sounded suspiciously to Oku as if his master might be weeping.
Glancing at his wife, he added ruefully: "I feel that I'm going to need it." Fanny halted and at that moment there was a knock at the door. "Come in," said Virginia. Oku entered with a pitcher o£ ice water and glasses. Salaaming low, he said: "Excuse please, Excuse!" The butler filled a glass and offered it to Virginia, but she shook her head. He then offered it to Fanny, who also declined.
