Young Hamilton, if he chose, could harry her around the world, and it would be none of Monte's business. There was something wrong with a situation of that sort. If he had only been born her brother or father, or even a first cousin, then it might be possible to do something, because, if necessary, he could remain always at hand.

He heard True's groaning curse; a spat of flame from where the man lay showed him that he was still to be counted on. But his shooting would be apt to be wild and he must be forgotten until Devine was dealt with. He was near enough to make out the gesture as Monte raised his arm. And he was ready. Howard fired first; he saw the flare and heard the report of Monte's gun and knew that he had missed.

This road of ours now became the road which the pursuit had taken before the capture. Going along, I noticed the footprints of many hoofs, rain-blurred but recent, and these were the tracks of the people I had met in the stable. "You can notice Monte's," said the Virginian. "He is the only one that has his hind feet shod. There's several trails from this point down to where we have come from."

He saw another stake and another and these like the first he snatched up and pitched wrathfully as far as he could throw them. 'That's something, if it isn't much, he muttered to himself. The others had held back, watching him. He could hear them speaking quickly among themselves, Bettins and True angrily. Monte's voice was low and steady. But it was Monte who came on first.

"I should think the least you'd expect of me would be to think it over," she answered. "It would be so much simpler just to go ahead," he declared. There seemed to be no apparent reason in the world why she should not assent to Monte's proposal.

She thought his cheeks were very white. "I can't tell," he answered. "But don't worry." He hurried Hamilton down the steps and pushed him into the car. "To the Hôtel Normandie," he ordered the driver, as he stumbled in himself. The bumping of the car hurt Monte's arm a good deal. In fact, with every bump he felt as if Hamilton were prodding his shoulder with a stiletto.

She was afraid of the quick, sweet shiver that ran over her whenever Mac touched her, of the strange weakness that came over her even now, as his hands claimed hers. "Say, I'm going to get out," she said suddenly. "Stop the car! Don't you hear me? I want to get out!" "Nonsense!" said Mac, "you don't even know where you are! You are coming with us to Monte's; that's what you are going to do."

Bud swore it was Monte & Pete. I went to flat & found M. & P. safe. Water in sink all gone. Bud got stomach trouble. I threw up my breakfast. Very hot weather. Lanced Monte's back & dressed it with creoline. Turned them loose & away they put again. Soon after this they arrived at the place where Thompson had located his claim.

The voices broke off and a man stood up. When he was within a score of paces of the fire Howard stopped. The man's thick squat form was clearly outlined. Unmistakably this was Monte Devine. There were two or three other forms squatting; it was impossible to distinguish a crouching man from a boulder. 'That you, Monte? called Howard. 'Good guess, came Monte's heavy, insolent voice.

The next suggestion that leaped into Monte's mind was obvious enough, yet he paused a moment before voicing it. Perhaps even then he would not have found the courage had he not been rather panic-stricken. He had exactly the same feeling, when he thought of her in Étois, that he had when he thought of Edhart in Paradise. It started as resentment, but ended in a slate-gray loneliness.
