This was the last of Meyerbeer's operas written in the Italian style. In 1827 the composer married, and for several years lived a quiet, secluded life. The loss of his first two children so saddened him as to concentrate his attention for a while on church music. During this period he composed only a "Stabat," a "Miserere," a "Te Deum," and eight of Klopstock's songs.
We passed one cross erected to commemorate a woman who died from self-inflicted injuries suffered during the procession of 1907. The procession emerges from the Morado chanting in low, doleful tune the Miserere. First come the Flagellantes, or marchers, scourging their naked backs with cactus belts and whips.
But does it not occur to you that one may love truth as he sees it, and his race as he views it, better than even the sympathy and approbation of many good men whom he honors, better than sleeping to the sound of the Miserere or listening to the repetition of an effete Confession of Faith? The three learned professions have but recently emerged from a state of quasi-barbarism.

One other circumstance distressed me. I could bear a Miserere myself, having had a good deal of open-air exercise of late; but I wished the old people somewhere else.
In strains of affected penitence, they chanted the Miserere "Have mercy, Lord." At the close of every verse they received, in the name of their master, the blows of a little switch on their shoulders.

At the end of the short lesson the words "Tu autem Domine, miserere nobis; Deo gratias" are added, and after these words are said "Adjutorium nostrum ... Qui fecit ... Benedicite Deus" and the Blessing, "Dominus nos benedicat ... requiescant in pace, Amen." Then Pater Noster is said silently, unless another Hour is to follow immediately. "Not this man, but Barrabas. Crucify Him."
