"We have whipped Sigel on the prairie by Coon Creek and killed we don't know how many. Tell Maude that George distinguished himself in the fight. We cavalry did not get a chance. "We have at last met McCulloch and his real soldiers. We cheered until we cried when we saw their ranks of gray, with the gold buttons and the gold braid and the gold stars.
Their import, to-day, is chiefly that of links in a chain of contributions to a progressive literature which has travelled into regions unforeseen by the author of the Proposal for the Poor, and the Inquiry into the Causes of the late Increase of Robbers. As such, they have their place in that library of Political Economy of which Mr. McCulloch has catalogued the riches.
McCulloch had been spared the gluttonous selfishness and infantile jealousy which are the commoner results of early political education. He had neither past nor future, and could afford to be careless of his company. Adams found him surrounded by all the active and intelligent young men in the country.
"Tribe of Ishmael," Oscar McCulloch in Proceedings of Fifteenth National Conference of Charities, pp. 154 sq. "The Rooney Family," see Charles Booth's "Life and Labor of the People," Vol. VIII, pp. 317 sq. "Life in New York Tenement Houses," William T. Elsing in "Scribner's," Vol. XI, pp. 677 sq. "An Experiment in Altruism," Miss Margaret Sherwood.
"Open every cell!" he was ordered by Godfrey McCulloch. "We must have them all out. There are torches and the old place might take light. The wood is sure to be as dry as tinder after four centuries!" And the lads of the "Bands" let the prisoners go, every man and woman of them.
McCulloch did not enjoy, and there were indications that in some respects he differed with the President. He was hampered by the fact that any change in the personnel of his department would be followed by inquiries from one party or the other, coupled oftentimes with complaints and criticisms. Great evils existed in the revenue system.
"Add hypocrisy to a Spaniard's vices and you have the Portuguese character," says Dr. Southey. "They are deceitful and cowardly have no public spirit nor national character," says Semple. "The morals of both sexes are lax in the extreme; assassination is a common offence; they rank about as low in the social scale as any people of Christendom," says McCulloch.
Clark did not seem to be at all disturbed by the embarrassing stillness, but went on shaving down a stick he was whittling. "I do not mean to manage the dipping myself," he explained at last. "I shall let Sandy McCulloch take charge of it." "Sandy McCulloch! Why, sir, that boy could never do it in the world! He is a good lad well enough in his way but not very smart. Not at all like his father."
Around him were gathered Surgeon-General Barnes, Vice-President Johnson, Senator Sumner, Secretaries Stanton and Welles, Generals Halleck and Meigs, Attorney-General Speed, Postmaster-General Dennison, Mr. McCulloch, Speaker Colfax, and other intimate friends who had been hastily summoned. Mrs. Lincoln sat in an adjoining room, prostrate and overwhelmed, with her son Robert.
This was Price's army, but Price had gone ahead into Kansas to beg the great McCulloch and his Confederates to come to their aid and save the state. "Dear mother, I wish that you and Jinny and Uncle Comyn could have seen this country rabble. How you would have laughed, and cried, because we are just like them. In the combined army two thousand have only bowie-knives or clubs.
