It had come only after many days of misunderstanding and doubt. "Dear Loyalheart, I can never forgive myself for making you so unhappy," Kathleen's crisp tones trembled. "And I shall never forgive you if you mention it again," retorted Grace. "You mustn't recall such things.
That's the highest praise I can offer. No wonder you annexed the name 'Loyalheart' at college." "Grace, have you any idea who furnished the copy for this?" Nora pointed a disapproving finger at the newspaper. "Do you that is do you suppose one of the girls I thought perhaps " "No, Kathleen West would never break her word." Grace smiled whimsically. "You were thinking of her?"
They halted at the general store, which also was the post office, hitched their horses to the tie rail and hurried in for their mail. "I have a letter from Tom," whispered Grace to Elfreda. "I must talk it over with the girls. Get them outside as soon as they can be induced to lay aside their letters." "Not bad news, Loyalheart?" "It may be," answered Grace.
Now I mustn't keep you any longer. Thank you, Loyalheart. You've been very sweet to poor, muddled Daffydowndilly." "You are a dear child and deserve the best that life can give you." Grace returned the gentle embrace with a tenderness that bespoke unutterable regard.
"You mustn't say that," Grace colored and shook her head in emphatic denial. "Oh, yes, I must, because it is the truth," insisted Emma. "Dear Loyalheart, your Highway of Life led you back into the Land of College, didn't it?" Grace nodded. "I'm going to stay in the Land of College too, Emma. I was just thinking about it when you came in. That was what made me say, 'I can't give up my work."
It was therefore a most mournful Loyalheart who listlessly packed a traveling bag, preparatory to the next morning's journey. Long after the house was quiet for the night, she lay awake, debating with herself whether or not it were wise to go to Overton. Morning found her still undecided.
If unbounded faith in Tom could help work the wonder of carrying him safely through his mission and home again to her, then she would bestow that faith ungrudgingly. Hers was too fine and steadfast a nature to quail at the first obstacle that rose to impede her highway of happiness. "Loyalheart" she had been christened and "Loyalheart" she would remain to the end of her days.
Kathleen began with her entrance into Overton as a freshman and told Evelyn the story of her hatred of Grace and her betrayal of Grace's trust, of how Elfreda had shown her the way to reparation and the gaining of true college spirit, and of how she had tried in a small measure to redeem the past by writing "Loyalheart" as a belated tribute to Grace. Evelyn listened with somber attentiveness.
Do I get the job?" "You do," laughed Grace, but the laugh ended in a sob against Elfreda's shoulder. It had been a trying day for poor Loyalheart and the inevitable reaction had set in. "You understand don't you?" she murmured brokenly. "Yes; I know how brave you've been to-day." Elfreda's soothing tones were a trifle unsteady, as she added in tender whimsicality, "I could see."
From the moment in which Loyalheart left Haven Home on her Four Years' Pilgrimage she ceased to exist as Grace Harlowe, merging her personality entirely in that of the beautiful allegorical character she was portraying. The play itself was in four acts, each representing one of the four college years.
