LEGS The fore-legs must be well feathered, perfectly straight, of medium length, and not such as would be termed "leggy" or "low" on leg, but in due proportion in length and strength to a well-balanced frame. Must be fine in bone and free in action. The hind-legs and thighs must be well feathered, neither contracted nor wide behind; the feet small and compact in shape.
But those who live out in the Mountain and visitors to Spartel have nothing to fear in these days in the shape of attack and robbery. It was about ten o'clock when we left behind us the leggy remains of a Roman aqueduct over the river, and, having climbed the Mountain, broke into open ground, stretching far away at the top.
The squire rose hurriedly and left the room. After him, one by one, trailed the tenants. At length, two only remained M'Adam, sitting solitary with a long array of empty chairs on either hand; and, at the far end of the table, Parson Leggy, stern, upright, motionless. When the last man had left the room the parson rose, and with lips tight-set strode across the silent hall.
"Gin ye sae muckle as touched Wullie d'ye ken what I'd do, James Moore?" asked the little man very smoothly. "Yes sweer," the other replied, and strode out of the room amid a roar of derisive laughter at M'Adam's expense. Owd Bob had now attained wellnigh the perfection of his art. The man ground at his movable piano, the wife held the tambourine, while his leggy little daughter danced with surprising grace on the stone walk.
I went up and told the young devils to stop it. They only looked at me in the injured way boys do, and one of them called out, 'It's mad, guv'nor! I told them to clear off, and they took to their heels. The dog followed me. It was a young, leggy, mild looking mongrel, cross I should say between a brown retriever and an Irish terrier.
'There is my niece Jane Erskine; she might be a graceful and elegant young woman, whereas she is sunburned, and it is a dreadful word of course but I can only call her leggy. Perhaps it is the fault of those narrow skirts. Women have never been so much respected since crinolines went out of fashion.
It is inclined to be too long in the body and too leggy, which, if not checked, will spoil the type of the breed. It is, therefore, very important that size should be more studied by judges than is at present the case.
"Yes, I do," she answered fervently, although she had not thought about him at all enough for her that Jeremy should hate him! Then she gasped: "Here he comes " He was walking towards them with a swagger of his long yellow neck and his thin leggy body that Jeremy found especially offensive. Jeremy "bristled," and Mary was conscious of that bristling. "Hallo!" said Ernest. "Hallo!" said Jeremy.
Job looked sidelong down his nose he was a leggy old galliganter, with stiverish grey hair and a jawbone long enough to make Cap'n Jacka a new pair of shins and said he, "What do'ee think of her?" "Well," said Jacka, "any fool can see she'll run, and any fool can see she'll reach.
