"To-morrow at six in the morning we continue our march. Meanwhile keep these fellows secure. I look to you for this." The sergeant saluted and we were led out. That night we pass'd in handcuffs, huddled with fifty soldiers in a hayloft of the inn and hearkening to their curious talk, that was half composed of Holy Writ and half of gibes at our expense.
"Here," she said, "carry that into the house, will you, an' ask me aunt Kate to give you the full of it with yella male, an' then hurry back. I'll be up in the hayloft," she added, moving off. He laid the crock of yellow meal down on a wooden box in the barn, and then climbed up the ladder to the hayloft. "Wheesht," she said, holding up her hand.
But she said nothing of a girl who had crouched behind the gatepost, shivering with cold and excitement, to watch the success of the plot which had been hatched by two playmates in the fragrant fastness of the hayloft, which had been always their favourite hiding-place.
About a week before the Christmas of my third year at Keilhau I went to the hayloft at dusk, and while scuffling with a companion the hay slipped with us and we both fell to the barn-floor. My school-mate sustained an internal injury, while I escaped with the fracture of two bones, fortunately only of the left arm.
I would fain tell here some of our adventures: how A enacted an escaped madman and we his pursuing keepers, and so got ourselves a lift in a cart, from which we ran away as we approached the lunatic asylum; how we were turned out of a little town at night, the townsfolk frightened by the loudness of our mirth; and how we once crept into a hayloft and were wakened in the dark morning by a pitchfork, and how the juvenile owner of that pitchfork fled through the window when he heard the complaints of the wounded man!
Then he sped across the floor to the back hall, and on through the long sheds to the hayloft in the barn the place where his father seemed always nearest. David was frightened and heartsick. NOBODY WANTED HIM. He had heard it with his own ears, so there was no mistake.
If I was to go myself, Stacy'd never rest till he found out my business Faith! I believe if I was hid in the hayloft o' the William Penn Tavern, he'd scent me out. Now, I can get the money of another fellow I know, if you'll take it down and hand it over for me. Would you be that obliging?" "Of course," Gilbert answered. "If I go it will be no additional trouble."
"Never mind," Peterson said, darting out the door, "I'll go down to the barn." He jumped from the porch and ran across the yard. He found Johnny in the barn, rigging a new block and tackle for the hayloft. Barney was helping thread the new, manila line from a coil on the straw-littered floor. "Johnny, we've found it," Peterson shouted jubilantly as he burst into the barn.
Hayloft," said the judge, "I am adjourning this court for a few days. From what I hear the nerve strain that you have undergone must have been most severe. Your friends tell me that you can hardly be in a state to take a proper interest in the case till you have had a thorough rest." As Hayloft left the court a cheer went up from the crowd, in which the judge joined.
You may imagine that I was by this time half dead with fatigue, but Mirlifiche insisted upon my feeding her unicorn before I did anything else. To accomplish this I had to climb up a long ladder into the hayloft, and bring down, one after another, twenty-four handfuls of hay. Never, never before, did I have such a wearisome task! It makes me shudder to think of it now, and that was not all.
