It is believed that the singing still continues, but it is known that nobody has heard it during the present century. The last legend reminds one of the "Lorelei" a legend of the Rhine. There is a song called "The Lorelei." Germany is rich in folk-songs, and the words and airs of several of them are peculiarly beautiful but "The Lorelei" is the people's favorite.

I do not mean that any language must be stamped out, that a thousand languages may not flourish by board and cradle and in folk-songs and village gossip Erse, the Taal, a hundred Indian and other Eastern tongues, Canadian French but I mean that also English must be available, that everywhere there must be English teaching.

It was like his astonishingly like; and hardly had the last note of "Mario's" song of love and death dropped into silence when the singer began anew with one of Caruso's own Neapolitan folk-songs, "Mama Mia." I had forgotten Mother and Father Beckett even Brian everyone except my lost Jim Wyndham and myself. But suddenly a touch on my hand made me start.

And in that instant, by some trick-fashion of the dance, the rollicking music stopped right off short in the middle of a note, the lights went out, the dancers fled precipitously to their seats, and out of the arbored gallery of the orchestra a single swarthy-faced male singer stepped forth into the wan wake of an artificial moon, and lifted up a marvelous tenor voice in one of those weird folk-songs of the far-away that fairly tear the listener's heart out of his body a song as sinisterly metallic as the hum of hate along a dagger-blade; a song as rapturously surprised at its own divinity as the first trill of a nightingale; a song of purling brooks and grim, gray mountain fortresses; a song of quick, sharp lights and long, low, lazy cadences; a song of love and hate; a song of all joys and all sorrows and then death; the song of Sex as Nature sings it the plaintive, wheedling, passionate song of Sex as Nature sings it yet in the far-away places of the earth.

The language is dignified and classical. Their great merit is the vivid and strong imaginative coloring with which situations and actions are portrayed. While in no sense folk-songs, they have always been great favorites with the German people. In 'The Diver' the stress falls upon the portraiture of the raging deep and its awful horrors.

Came without burden, she came with peace; She came the good peasant to cheer. Through all the centuries the people have sung her praise, and they sing it yet. Of the many folk-songs that have come down from the middle ages, those that tell of Queen Dagmar are the sweetest, as they are the most mournful, for her happiness was as brief as her life was beautiful.

The Norman airs and folk-songs of the day were easy to learn, simple and melodious. They have remained in the hearts and on the lips of all French Canada for over two centuries. The shantyman of Three Rivers still goes off to the woods chanting the Malbrouck s'en va-t-en guerre which his ancestors sang in the days of Blenheim and Oudenarde.

Until then the gipsies scraped their fiddles and banged their czimbalom almost uninterruptedly; hundreds of sad and gay folk-songs were sung in chorus in the intervals of dancing the national dance. Cotton petticoats of many hues fluttered, leather boots both red and black clinked and stamped until the morning.

Where the trees broke he would be able to look down upon it, see every roof he knew so well the church, the mill, the winding Muhlde the green, worn grey with dancing feet, where, when the hateful war was over, would be heard again the Saxon folk-songs. Another was there, where the forest halts on the brow of the hill a figure kneeling on the ground with his face towards the village.

They had believed in the divine mission of the German people as a civilizing force, and now they were despised by all other peoples as a brutal and barbarous race, in spite of German music, German folk-songs, German art, German sentiment.
