Dessau, 6087, 6089; Hardy, Roman Laws, part 2, pp. 34, 108. For these decrees, which are practically equivalent at this date to laws, see CIL. x. 1401 = Dessau 6043, and de Pachtère in Mélanges Cagnat, p. 169. For the letter of Hadrian see Bulletin de Corresp. Hell. x. 111; it is quoted by Bruns, Fontes, 1909, p. 200. Compare the Historia Augusta, Life of Hadrian, ch. 18. Mommsen, Eph.
Uncle Eph ruminated for quite a while, but I saw by the solid puffs he was taking at his pipe that his mind was working. Then a big smile, broader than ever, lit up his face, and he said slowly: "Well, if you're so minded, I'll tell you a yarn about a fellow called 'Sally' who lived down our way in my early days." At this I just settled down comfortably to listen.
But affirmatively understand all these church guides extraordinary and ordinary, which Christ hath erected in his Church, vesting them with power and authority therein, viz. apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers, governments, or ruling elders, mentioned together in Eph. iv. 8, 11; 1 Cor. xii. 28; 1 Tim. v. 17; Rom. xii. 6-8.
Super-disinterested benevolence! And if it be doing unto others as we would have them do to us, to make them work for our own good alone, Paul should be called to order for his hard sayings against human nature, especially for that libellous matter in Eph. v. 29, "No man ever yet hated his own flesh, but nourisheth it and cherisheth it."
I have always had a deep admiration for your native land. I vinerate the mimory of that great, that noble Eyetalian who was the original and first discoverer of this here land of ours. "Why, gintlemen, at me mother's knee I was taught to sing that inspirin' song: 'Columbus, the Jim of the Ocean'!" Whereupon there was loud applause. Mr. Johnsing had an enthusiastic admirer in Little Eph Jones.
The smell of coffee and bacon was wafted in from the galley when the young submarine captain next awoke. "Well," announced Eph, as Jack and Hal came forward for their breakfast, "Trotter and Packwood haven't caught the fellows that laid the mine." "It doesn't look strongly probable that they'll catch them, either," Jack replied.
Come on, you fellows. I want everybody in the camp. We're goin' to hold a regular town meetin'." Rough and Ready was another conglomeration of tents new and old, bough lean-tos, and shacks covered with canvas. In front of a tent labeled, rudely: "New York Generul Store," Eph halted and uttered a resounding whoop.
"Tell the crew we're going to run below the surface until the air becomes noticeably bad. We want to test out the compressed-air devices for purifying the atmosphere." So Hal stepped forward with the message. "Don't you think the air begins to smell queer already?" demanded Eph, looking up. "I'm willing to have some compressed air turned on right now."
"But, surely," cried Cynthia, who could scarcely wait for him to finish, "surely you're going to give Cousin Eph the post-office, aren't you, Uncle Jethro? All you have to do is to tell the President that you want it for him. Why, I had an idea that we came down for that." "Now, Cynthy," Ephraim put in, deprecatingly. "Who else would get the post-office?" asked Cynthia.
So the four piled below, and, in one of the state-rooms aft, Andrews pointed to a goodly store of clothing, much more than would be needed for the present, and of different sizes, even to shoes. There were also rough bath towels with which to rub down dry. "I wonder do I come in on these?" murmured Eph, doubtfully.
