For men who had always been on respectful financial terms with Dysart and his string of banks and his Algonquin enterprise were holding aloof from him; men who had figured for years in the same columns of print where his name was so often seen as director and trustee and secretary fellow-members who served for the honour of serving on boards of all sorts, charity boards, hospital, museum, civic societies these men, too, seemed to be politely, pleasantly, even smilingly edging away from him in some indefinable manner.
It was a very silent old house. Outside, the front windows stared gravely down upon the tidy drive with its rhododendron shrubberies, the well-kept lawn with the triangular beds, and the belt of gloomy fir trees edging the high brick wall that ran along the public road. The windows were always draped and curtained, and opened one foot at the top with monotonous regularity.
The latter came to her side, if not for protection, as might be maliciously supposed, at least for company. "I cannot understand at all," said Fischelowitz, still edging away. "You understand well enough, I think, and as for you, Frau Fischelowitz, I have something to talk of with you, too. But we will put it off until later," he added, as though suddenly changing his mind.
"The shot must fly pretty fast then; see how they bowl along," cried Tom; "look, two of them are edging in for the land, while the third holds her course. The ship seems doubtful which she will follow. They may be all rogues together; or the last may be honest, and only wishes to lead her a wild-goose chase for the sake of favouring the others.
It scares me to think of dying and leaving you without any security." One of the waiters, half-dead with curiosity, was edging near, under pretense of brushing the table, and so the mistress rose and took up the burdens of her stewardship. "But we'll talk it over to-night. Don't be hasty." "I won't," replied the girl. She was by no means as unmoved as she gave out.
But surely she did not fire that gun? And, if she did not oho! what is this? There is another craft astern of her! I can just make out her mastheads rising above the horizon. Now, did number two fire that gun; and, if so, why? I must get my glasses; this promises to be interesting. And we shall see more of it presently; they are crossing our hawse in a diagonal direction, and edging this way."
The lines of the enemy, edging this tract of mire, were consequently in the shape of an open V. Thus the military situation at this particular point may be pictorially represented by a salient semicircle, a dash, and another salient semicircle faced by a wide, open V. Imagine such a situation complicated by offensive and counter-offensive, during which the French have seized part of the hills and the German part of the plain, till the whole region is a madman's maze of barbed wire, earthy lines, trenches, some of them untenable by either side and still full of the dead who fell in the last combat, shell holes, and fortified craters.
The chief was not to be balked of his purpose, and kept edging toward the door of the barabbara. "Kill-um bad mans," he muttered. "Him steal." Rob, seeing that he was bent on this, and unable to dissuade him from his certainty that the fugitive was inside the hut, for the moment scarcely knew what to do. "No touch-um mans!" he finally commanded, sternly.
"So Jim and me begins edging away, until we could get a gait on without being noticed; and get away we did, and into the woods where our own clothes were hid; made the change and was getting back to our own quarters, happy as larks to be on the home road; laughing to think how near we'd been to Gineral Stuart, without his knowing it; and patting ourselves on the back at how neatly we'd done the trick, when Jim looks up and says, 'Hey, Tom, look at them persimmons, Sure enough, there was a tree full of the nicest ripe persimmons you ever see, right in our way.
"It would take a long time to kill all those fish," she said. "Most of them are dead already, and the others will be dead soon...." But he could not rid himself of the feeling that the fish were suffering agonies, and he began to feel sick with pity. "I think I'll go and see Mary and Ninian," he said to Mrs. Graham, edging away from the boat. "All right," she replied.
