Around one stretched a desert of shell craters hole bordering upon hole so that there was no space at all between them. Each hole was circular like the ring of earth at the mouth of an ants' nest several thousand times magnified, and they stretched away like the waves of the sea. Far to the left was a bare, brown hill-side.

I have noted several distinct little craters on its surface, mostly on the N.E. side; and on the E. side a triangular dark patch, close to the foot of the wall, very similar in size and appearance to those within Alphonsus. Schmidt shows a ridge and several craters in the interior.

NICOLAI. A tolerably regular ring-plain, 18 miles in diameter, S. of Riccius, with a border, rising more than 6000 feet above a level floor, on the N. side of which Schmidt shows a minute crater. The bright plain surrounding this formation abounds in small craters; and on the W. is a number of curious enclosures, many of them overlapping.

Scattered over the greater part of the district here referred to are a number of conical eminences, often with craters, the bottoms of which are usually sunk much below the present level of the country, and thus receiving the surface drainage, have been converted into little lakes called "maars," differing from ordinary lakes by their circular form and the absence of any apparent outlet for their waters.

"Steve I mean, Captain Strong. The rest of the fleet! It's coming in! Attacking from top-side!" "By the craters of Luna, you're right!" yelled the young Solar Guard captain, as he saw the white blips on the scanner screen. "O.K., it's time to stop running and fight!"

Its border, to a great extent linear, is very irregular, and much broken by the interposition of small ring-plains and craters, and on the N. by cross-valleys. Its general height is about 4000 feet, the loftiest peak on the W. wall rising to more than 9000 feet above the floor.

"Spaceship bearing 098 full thrust! Range now four twenty-five!" "By the craters of Luna," shouted Tom, "why didn't you pick her up sooner, Roger?" "Never mind that. Contact that guy and tell him to change course! He can't brake in time now!" "All right! Sign off!" Without waiting for a reply, Tom cut Roger off and switched to a standard space band.

Here the graceful bird delights to dwell, calling and singing from his post on a branch overhanging the perpendicular cliffs, hundreds of feet above the level earth. One of them, indeed, secures his beloved solitude by inhabiting the craters of extinct volcanoes. In sprightliness of manner this bird of solitude reminds one of the catbird, whom he also greatly resembles in looks.

What all the governments based on smothered pauperism, tolerated ignorance, and organized degradation have to fear is the subterranean fire, which finds its vent in blazing craters, or breaks up all the ancient landmarks in earth-shattering convulsions. God forbid that we should invoke any such catastrophe even for those who have been hardest upon us in our bitter trial!

They had been first made by men who had run rapidly forward with spade and rifle, stooping as they ran, who had dropped into the craters of big shells, who had organised these chiefly at night and dug the steep ditches sideways to join up into continuous trenches.
