"Nice stories you and your crowd have been telling about me and Carl," went on Ham, coming closer. "Trying to get us into trouble," put in Carl. "It's a jolly shame and you ought to be thrashed for it." "See here, Dudder, and you too, Spink," answered Charley firmly, "I want no quarrel with you. Ever since our outing last summer you have been like bears with sore heads.
For the moment the enemy were disconcerted, and taking advantage of this, Snap and Shep started on a run through the dark forest, moving as swiftly as the condition of the ground would permit. The Spink crowd came after them, shouting to them to stop. Carl Dudder called out that he would shoot if they did not halt. "Do you think he'll do it?" asked Shep uneasily.
"But you do know -your actions show it!" shouted Whopper. "Boys, don't let them get away until they tell us where our boat is!" Snap and the others were quick to act, and Dick Bush and Carl Dudder were at once surrounded. "Look here -you -you let us go!" said Dick Bush. His face showed how uncomfortable he felt. "Tell us where the boat is." "I -er -I don't know." "That isn't true," said Whopper.
As my old readers know, Carl Dudder was a close crony to Ham Spink and had done his full share in making our young friends uncomfortable during the summer outing. "Dudder, aren't you ashamed of yourself?" said Snap. "What are you talking about?" demanded Carl Dudder, although he trembled a little as he spoke. "You threw those snowballs at Mammy Shrader." "I didn't." "You did I saw you."
"It was, as Dick says, only a joke -and we got paid back for it," put in Carl Dudder. "How?" "Somebody came to our camp and robbed us. We thought it was your crowd." "Were you really robbed?" asked Shep. "Yes; some of our best clothing is gone and also some of our stores." "Well, we were not near your camp, I can give you my word of honor on that," said Snap.
Dudder got angry and ordered everybody off, and took his guests into the mansion. Ham and Carl were so chagrined they knew not what to do. "We must find out who did this," said Ham. "Maybe it was Snap Dodge and his crowd," suggested Carl. "It would be just like them." "If they are guilty -I'll fix them!" went on Ham, bitterly. "They had no business to touch our fireworks.
But the tramp did not appreciate what had been done for him and ran away with some of their things, which brought on a lively pursuit. Then the boys had more trouble with Ham Spink and his crony, Carl Dudder. In the end it was discovered that Ham and Carl had gotten the tramp to annoy the young hunters, and as a result Mr. Spink and Mr. Dudder had to foot some heavy bills for their sons.
"Here, Carl Dudder, you leave that boy alone!" cried the doctor's son. "Don't you dare to touch him!" "I'll do as I please. The boy doesn't belong to you," blustered Carl. "I know that -but you are not going to lay the weight of your finger on him." "Don't do it," whispered Ham to his crony in alarm. "Remember, they are five to two."
The truth about the doings of Ham Spink and Carl Dudder soon leaked out, so far as our friends were concerned, although the matter was kept from the general public. Both Mr. Spink and Mr. Dudder were anxious that no charge of theft should be made against Kiddy Leech, so the tramp was merely given thirty days in jail for vagrancy, and was then given some money by Mr.
"Ham Spink, I want to say just one thing," answered Snap. "I think you are as mean as you ever were, and I, for one, am going to pay you back for what you did the day we went swimming." "Oh, give us a rest" muttered the dudish youth, and went on, and Carl Dudder followed, sticking his tongue in his cheek as he passed. "Say, shall we pitch into them?" whispered Whopper.
