Take one illustration from the Old Testament and one from the New to show what lower or textual criticism does. In the ninth chapter of Isaiah the third verse reads: "Thou hast multiplied the nation and not increased the joy." That word "not" is troublesome. It disagrees with the rest of the passage.

There is not a single circumstance in which either of our narrations disagrees, and every one of the particulars in mine, which seems most astonishing, is attested by this, and sometimes in stronger words, one only excepted, on which I shall add a short remark when I come to it. This memorable event happened towards the middle of July, 1719; but I cannot be exact as to the day.

Leave a pint of peas in the pot, with the water they were boiled in; make a thickening of flour, milk and butter, seasoned with salt, pepper, parsley and thyme; toast two or three slices of bread; cut it up in the tureen; and when the soup has boiled about ten minutes, pour it over. Children are mostly fond of pea soup, and it seldom disagrees with them.

More redoubtable than political discontent was the proselytizing activity of the leaders of the movement in Russia. Trotzky is an unscrupulous despot, in whose veins flows the poison of malignity. This place disagrees so much with me that I shall leave it as soon as the dispersion of the circuit commences, that is, after the delivery of the last batch of briefs; always supposing, which may be supposed without much risk of mistake, that there are none for me. Ever yours affectionately

Lavender, "as I myself should wish to be regarded, 'without fear and without reproach. For that is, as I understand it, the principle on which a gentleman must live, ever believing of others what he would wish believed of himself. With the exception of Germans," he added hastily. "Naturally," returned the Personage. "And I'll defy you to find anything in them which disagrees with that formula.

Zollekoffer says, that in intermittent fevers the Prussiate of iron is in its effects superior to Cinchona bark, and says it never disagrees with the stomach, or creates nausea even in the most irritable state, while bark is not unfrequently rejected; a patient will recover from the influence of intermitting and remitting fevers, in the generality of cases, in much less time than is usual in those cases in which bark is employed.

Hence the head is sure to be affected by whatever disorders the stomach, whether from any particular aliment that disagrees with it, or being over filled, or too long empty. Hence also, too frequently, arise apoplexy, or paralytic affections, especially in aged people.
