There is nothing to make one realize the importance of mud, indeed, like a journey up Nile when the inundation is just over. You lounge on the deck of your dahabieh, and drink in geography almost without knowing it. For in Egypt you get your phenomenon isolated, as it were, from all disturbing elements.

They were still three to one, however, and if they should once get aboard the dahabîeh the defenders' chance would be a very poor one. They were but a few yards off and ceased firing. Evidently they had spent all their ammunition, and were going to attempt to board the vessel and capture it with a hand-to-hand fight.

They were still some distance in the rear, and had so far gained nothing on the fugitives. But it was very apparent they were making a great effort, and presently it became evident they were slowly but surely gaining upon the dahabîeh. The men were posted all round the vessel, prepared to fire on either boat the moment it came within range.

"He is the mate of Naoum's dahabîeh. I remember distinctly now. I wonder how he got here; he seemed a decent sort of nigger, too! I wonder if he were forced into Arabi's service against his will? I must find out; if so, he may be of use to me." Joy came into his heart, and he laughed aloud.

Never to know what they were to have for dinner, nor to be asked what they would like, and yet always to have a dinner you could ask chance friends to, knowing all would be perfectly served! Some of the party with whom they had engaged their dahabieh had even brought canned baked beans from New England, which seemed to make their happiness complete. "Though we see beans here," said Mrs.

"Thus far we have escaped," said Naoum, as the two men stood on the rough untidy dahabîeh, gazing at the slowly receding town. "They will probably not attempt to follow us, but I don't, for one moment, think our troubles are over. We must keep a sharp look-out along the banks for the rebels." "You think then we shall come across them again?" asked George, glancing keenly at the speaker.

While he was yet eating his unsavoury meal one of the new men entered it was the man he had recognized. Glancing furtively at his fellow-guard outside, he advanced to the centre of the room, and with a smile that displayed a row of brilliant teeth, said "You remember, eh, de dahabîeh?" Helmar glanced up with a smile. "Yes, you helped us to beat off the rebels, I remember. I saw you this morning.

She relapsed into reverie, an uncommon experience for her; and her mind floated indefinitely from one thing to another, while she was half conscious of the smell of coffee permeating the air, and of the low resonant notes of the Nubian boys, as, with locked shoulders, they scrubbed the decks of a dahabieh near by with hempshod feet.

His first messengers to us were killed, and that is why the news of the relief came so late. But all is well at last. I have come to say so to Lady Eglington even before I went to the Effendina." He made a gesture towards a huge and gaily-caparisoned dahabieh not far away. "Kaid was right about coming here. His health is better. He never doubted Claridge Pasha's return; it was une idee fixe.

"They come to de dahabîeh Arabi's men and they say I must go with them, so I am here, but I not like." "Ah, I see, you were pressed into the service," said Helmar, "and you are here against your will." The man nodded, then again glancing suspiciously round, said "But you, they kill you Arabi shoot you when you get to Damanhour."
