It needed a few minutes to put them at their ease; and, in some way they could not understand, they were more easy when Crandall turned round and said his prayers a ceremony he had neglected for some years. "Oh, I am sorry. I've forgotten to put out the gas." "Please don't bother," said the prefect of the dormitory. "Worthington does that."
Andy thought this very kind and considerate on the part of his new employer. To his surprise he, too, was paid half a week's salary something he did not expect. Though Simon Rich had succeeded in reinstating his nephew in the store in place of Andy, he was not altogether happy. John Crandall was naturally lazy and inefficient, and his temporary discharge did not seem to have improved him.
Doors and windows were broken in, and the building was so thoroughly wrecked as to be uninhabitable. Having no money with which to make repairs, she was forced to abandon the structure and her educational business at the same time. The Crandall family became noted for its martyrs. A brother of Prudence Crandall was Dr. Reuben Crandall, of Washington City.
Wilkinson, and said, ``Remember; when I am gone this portrait of Prudence Crandall is to go to Andrew White for Cornell University, where my anti-slavery books already are. As I left him, both of us were in the most cheerful mood, he appearing better than during some weeks previous. Next morning I learned that he had died during the night.
May, who had stood by her, said when he saw the door locked and the key taken out, "The deed is done, completely done. It cannot be recalled. It has passed into the history of our nation and age." Miss Crandall was tried the 23d of August, 1833, at Brooklyn, the county seat of the county of Windham.
Mason received the message in some surprise. What could a boy from Flint's have to say to her? However, she entered the parlor, where John Crandall was waiting to see her. "You are from Mr. Flint's?" she asked. "Yes, ma'am." "What business can you have with me? I have bought no jewelry lately." "I know it, Mrs. Mason. It isn't about jewelry I wish to speak." "What, then?"
Some time ago an article in Scribner's Magazine revived the memories which cluster around the name of Prudence Crandall, of Windham County, Connecticut. Who was this woman? In a volume of autobiographical recollections and reminiscences published in 1887, Laura S. Haviland thus answers this question:
The law known as the "Black Act" or the "Canterbury law" under which Miss Crandall was indicted and tried was repealed, except a single provision, which is not considered objectionable. The right to trial by jury was secured to persons who are claimed as slaves. Resolutions were passed protesting against the annexation of Texas to the Union.
At Canterbury in the same state Prudence Crandall, a young Quaker woman twenty-nine years of age, was brought face to face with the problem when she admitted a Negro girl, Sarah Harris, to her school. When she was boycotted she announced that she would receive Negro girls only if no others would attend, and she advertised accordingly in the Liberator.
This was a Squadron Commander of Bengal Lancers, home on leave. "I'm afraid he'll have to go up to his old dormitory. You know old boys can claim that privilege. Yes, I think little Crandall minor must bed down there once more." "Bates Sahib " a Gunner flung a heavy arm round the Head's neck "you've got something up your sleeve. Confess! I know that twinkle."
