In five minutes the band had disappeared into the jungle in the opposite direction and the district was cleared; and by that time Hawk Carse was again in his space-suit, out of the control room and busy at the mechanism of one of the great ship-sized port-locks in the dome, having left behind him both Ban and Friday to guard Dr. Ku.
I do not fear Carse: he is only an adventurer; but your brain, Master Leithgow, I respect. "For, naturally, brains will determine the future of these planets around us. The man with the most profound and extensive scientific knowledge united to the greatest audacity remember, audacity! can rule them every one!" He paused and looked into the eyes of the Master Scientist.
The doomed man met the gray eyes and their agony with a smile. "It's all right, old comrade," he said. "Just remember to destroy this hellish device, if you ever possibly can. My love to Sandra; and to her, and my dear ones on Earth, anything but the truth.... Farewell." Carse's fingernails bit each one into his palms. He hesitated; tried, but could not speak. "All right, Carse you may go."
Man cannot harm you there." "But, to-day, of all seasons " "It is hard: but you have done with captivity. No more captivity! My dear Lady Carse, what remains! What is it you would have? You would not wish for vengeance! No! it is pain! you are in pain. Shall I raise you?" "No, no: never mind the pain! But I did hope to see my husband again." "To forgive him. You mean, to forgive him?"
Leithgow smiled gently in answer, then left the cabin for the sleep he needed so badly. Hawk Carse was left alone on watch in the fleeing Sandra. A lonely, intent figure, he stood over the chart-table, working out their best course to Earth. Presently, however, he went back to the infra-red electelscope and swept it over the leagues behind.
There seemed to be no sort of question that she could answer. In a few days more the desire for some conversation with somebody became very pressing, and Lady Carse was not in the habit of denying herself anything she wished for. Still, her pride pulled the other way.
The Negro nodded and moved as silently as was possible in his space-suit to obey. And Carse turned again to the thing to which he had made a promise. The icy-glittering case was full of a colorless liquid in which were grouped at the bottom, several delicate, colored instruments, all interconnected by a maze of countless spidery silver wires.
Ban muttered to himself, lowering the device. "And damn Ku Sui for makin' these space-suits so infernally uncomfortable! Might as well have made 'em space-ships, while he was at it!... Say, Carse," he began again aloud into his microphone, "maybe Dr. Ku's come already.
As for the other parties, they were far too busy far too much devoted to each other to have any time to spare for her, or any thought, except when the children were wished out of the way, or when the much more ardent desire was indulged that her house could be had for the residence of Lady Carse and her maid.
Some sweet old words here occurred to Lady Carse, linked with a sweet old psalm tune words of longing to have wings like a dove, to flee away and be at rest. She murmured these words; and they brought softening tears. "You see, madam," said Annie, "your nest is made for you.
