Not understanding, still horrified by the contorted face of the man on the deck, the other two gazed at the adventurer. "But, Carse!" Leithgow broke out. "How can you? How can you possibly " "He's gone back to the dome," the Hawk cut in frostily.
On the approach of the English the Scotch fell back from the Torwood to some high ground near Stirling now called the New Park. The lower ground, now rich agricultural land called the Carse, was then wholly swamp. Had it not been so, the position now taken up by Bruce would have laid the road to Stirling open to the English. In the screen Earth made a titanic background against which, a falling, dwindling figure in a clear-cut in the sunlight, gleamed space-suit. Down it went, rapidly, even as they stared, until it hung just off the also-falling asteroid.
"They are actually going away without helping us to uncord the package." She called after them; but in answer to her scolding, the men only stared; which made Lady Carse tell them they were idiots. A word or two from Annie in Gaelic brought them back directly, and obtained from them what aid was needed. "Shall I enquire, madam," asked Annie, "anything that you may wish to know?"
