His coat of shell is yellowish in color and is divided in the middle of his body into nine narrow bands or joints. Because of this he is called the Nine-banded Armadillo. In the countries to the south of this he has a cousin with three bands and another with six. Hardshell's head is very long and he carries it pointed straight down.

I have been sometimes three-quarters of a day in digging out one armadillo, and obliged to sink half a dozen pits seven feet deep before I got up to it. The Indians and negroes are very fond of the flesh, but I considered it strong and rank.

The interior surface, as well as the lower part of the body, was covered with coarse scattered hairs, of which some were seen to issue forth between the joints of the armour. It had a pointed snout, long ears, short, thick limbs, and stout claws. "There are several species of the armadillo," observed our friend. "The creature before us is the Dasypus sexcinctus.

"I pledge the assembled company in this rich butter," Gerald continued with dignity, "though it is not so comfortable to drink, and I propose, first, the confusion of Ferguson, who is a pettifogger and an armadillo, and, secondly, the health of our captain, Roger, the Codger, who saved the Cheemaun. Three cheers for the well-bred captain of the "

Apparently an order had gone forth, or a general understanding been come to, that the rails were not to be crossed. These ants do not appear to have many enemies, though I sometimes found holes burrowed into their nests, probably by the small armadillo.

Meanwhile and hereby hangs a tale I was interested, not merely in the Armadillo, but in the excellent taste with which it, and everything else, was cooked in a little open shed over a few stones and firesticks. And complimenting my host thereon, I found that he had, there in the primeval forest, an admirable French cook, to whom I begged to be introduced at once. Poor fellow!

Now if, on introducing the stick, a number of mosquitos come out, the Indians know to a certainty that the armadillo is in it: whenever there are no mosquitos in the hole there is no armadillo. The Indian having satisfied himself that the armadillo is there by the mosquitos which come out, he immediately cuts a long and slender stick and introduces it into the hole.

"Arms-what-o?" inquired Barney. "Armadillo," repeated the hermit. "He is very good to eat but very difficult to catch. He digs down so fast we cannot catch him, and must smoke him out of his hole." "Have you many cows?" inquired Martin, as he replenished his cup with coffee. "Cows?" echoed the hermit, "I have got no cows." "Where do you get such capital cream, then?" asked Martin in surprise.

Gringalet, who then appeared at the top of the slope, was evidently the cause of its sudden flight. I rejoined my companions, carrying my prisoner, who tried neither to defend itself nor to escape. Lucien examined with curiosity the scales which crossed the back of the armadillo, and its pink transparent skin.

The ant-eater the foolish fellows had eaten themselves I would have given them what they asked for his skeleton; but the Armadillo was cut up and hashed for us, and was eaten, to the last scrap, being about the best game I ever tasted. I fear he is a foul feeder at times, who by no means confines himself to roots, or even worms.
