XXIII. Out of Plato. It is not possible, answered he. Then neither will such a one account death a grievous thing? By no means. XXIV. Out of Antisthenes. 'It is a princely thing to do well, and to be ill-spoken of.
And it came to pass, while He blessed them, He was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. LUKE xxiv. 50, 51. 'And when He had spoken these things, while they beheld, He was taken up; and a cloud received Him out of their sight. ACTS i. 9. Clara read slowly: "'One basket had very good figs, even like the figs that are first ripe; and the other basket had very naughty figs, which could not be eaten, they were so bad ." Jer. xxiv. 2. "But can figs be naughty, Miss Harson?" asked Edith, with very wide-open eyes. "I thought that only children were naughty,"
His argument appears to be as follows. Laying this foundation, that Prophecy proceeds from the Holy Spirit, it is a stronger argument than a miracle, which depends upon eternal evidence, and testimony. And this opinion of Peters is corroborated by the words of Jesus himself, who, in Mat. xxiv: 23, 24, Mark xiii: 21, 22, affirms, that miracles wrought in confirmation of a pretenders being the Messiah, are not to be considered as proof of his being so though they show great signs and wonders, believe it not, is his command to his disciples.
The Lord, however, gave us much help in pointing out the truth to the brethren, so that the number of those who considered that only baptized believers should be in communion decreased almost daily. How does it appear to be the mind of God that, in every church, there should be recognized Elders? Ans. From the following passages compared together: Matt. xxiv. 45; Luke xii. 42.

See Browning's inspiring poem, Rabbi Ben Ezra, XXIII, XXIV, XXV: "Quem di diligunt adolescens moritur." "Sir, we had a good talk." Matthew xvi. 24. Matthew xxv. 41. Luke xxiv. 46. Romans viii. 18. 2 Corinthians xii. 2. Acts ix. 16. Luke ix. 23. Acts xiv. 21. Of the inward voice of Christ to the faithful soul I will hearken what the Lord God shall say within me. Blessed is the soul which heareth the Lord speaking within it, and receiveth the word of consolation from His mouth.
XXIV. Though he made no scruple to assume and exercise immediately the imperial authority, by giving orders that he should be attended by the guards, who were the security and badge of the supreme power; yet he affected, by a most impudent piece of acting, to refuse it for a long time; one while sharply reprehending his friends who entreated him to accept it, as little knowing what a monster the government was; another while keeping in suspense the senate, when they implored him and threw themselves at his feet, by ambiguous answers, and a crafty kind of dissimulation; insomuch that some were out of patience, and one cried out, during the confusion, "Either let him accept it, or decline it at once;" and a second told him to his face, "Others are slow to perform what they promise, but you are slow to promise what you actually perform."
