Tita laid down her book. She was a little anxious. Sometimes you could see Charlie and Franziska on the path by the side of the lake; at other times the thick trees by the water's side hid them. The solitary oar dipped in the lake; the boat glided along the shores. Tita took up her book again.
Tita said the Black Forest was the most charming place in the world; and as it was Christmas Day, and as we had been listening to a sermon all about charity and kindness and consideration for others, nobody was rude enough to contradict her.
Oh! why do people build rooms with only one door in them? I'm undone." She glances wildly round her, and in the far distance of this big drawing-room espies a screen. "That," gasps she, "that will do! I'll hide myself behind that. Don't keep him long, Meg darling! Hurry him off. Say you've got the cholera any little thing like that and get rid of him." "Tita you can't. It is impossible.
"Maurice" to Rylton, who has come on the scene a moment later than his wife, so immediately after her, indeed, that one might be forgiven for imagining he had come in her train, only for one thing, he had come from an opposite direction "Maurice, I think Tita should be induced to lie down for a bit. She looks tired." "Nonsense," says Tita.
It took Miss Tita rather longer than I had expected to guess that I was there; but when at last she came out she looked at me without surprise. I said to her that I had been waiting for her, and she asked why I had not let her know.
It was some gilt paint and a brush! She let Tonio gild the goat's horns and hoofs, and Tita gilded the legs and feet of the little white hen. While she was doing it, the red rooster stuck his bill into the dish and swallowed two great big bites of gold paint on his own account! Doña Teresa saw him do it. "If he isn't trying to gild himself on the inside!" she cried.
"No I tell you plainly I shall go to see you when she is away, never when she is with you." "But why? You certainly can't believe she has any tendresse for Mr. Hescott." "Why should I not believe it?" gloomily. "Why should you? Dear Maurice, be sensible. I know that Tita cares nothing for him." "How? Has she told you?" "Not told me. But one can see." "So can another one."
Presently a gondola passed along the canal with its slow rhythmical plash, and as we listened we watched it in silence. It did not stop, it did not carry the doctor; and after it had gone on I said to Miss Tita: "And where are they now the things that were in the trunk?" "In the trunk?" "That green box you pointed out to me in her room.
I don't know why this article fascinated me so, inasmuch as I certainly had no definite purpose of breaking into it; but I stared at it so hard that Miss Tita noticed me and changed color. Her doing this made me think I was right and that wherever they might have been before the Aspern papers at that moment languished behind the peevish little lock of the secretary.
And after a faint struggle with herself, Tita joins in his mirth. Emboldened by this departure, and really anxious to make it up with her, Rylton bids her good-night again, and this time would have added a kiss to his adieu. But Tita pushed him away. "Kiss you? Not likely!" says she scornfully; "I shall never want to kiss you again in all my life!"
