On landing in the evening, Good would at once set to work, with the help of the Askari, to build a little 'scherm', or small enclosure, fenced with thorn bushes, and to light a fire. I, with Sir Henry and Umslopogaas, would go out to shoot something for the pot. Generally this was an easy task, for all sorts of game abounded on the banks of the Tana.

The next place is Bassen, a small dirty place in comparison with Damann, which supplies Goa with rice and wheat, besides timber for the construction of ships and gallies. At a small distance from Bassen is a small island named Tana, well peopled with Portuguese, Moors, and Gentiles.
The Tupaia Tana of Sumatra has been selected by Mr. Waterhouse for this illustration, because the jaws of that small insectivorous quadruped bear a great resemblance to those of the Stonesfield Amphitherium.
He found Tana seated at the kitchen table before a miscellaneous assortment of odds and ends cigar-boxes, knives, pencils, the tops of cans, and some scraps of paper covered with elaborate figures and diagrams. "What the devil you doing?" demanded Anthony curiously. Tana politely grinned. "I show you," he exclaimed enthusiastically. "I tell " "You making a dog-house?" "No, sa." Tana grinned again.
"Cheer up, Gloria!" suggested Maury. "You seem the least bit depressed." "I'm not," she lied. "Here, Tannenbaum!" he called over his shoulder. "I've filled you a drink. Come on!" Gloria tried to stay his arm. "Please don't, Maury!" "Why not? Maybe he'll play the flute for us after dinner. Here, Tana." Tana, grinning, bore the glass away to the kitchen. In a few moments Maury gave him another.
But they dared not dismiss him. Such a step would have been abhorrent to their inertia. They endured Tana as they endured ill weather and sickness of the body and the estimable Will of God as they endured all things, even themselves. One sultry afternoon late in July Richard Caramel telephoned from New York that he and Maury were coming out, bringing a friend with them.
It might easily have been mistaken for a bare fork of the tree, with the mottled shadows of the leaves cast upon it. Along the Tana River I saw several herds of giraffe, perhaps fifty head in all, but it was on the great stretches of the scrub country that slopes down from Mount Elgon that I saw the great herds of them.
In one of the tents of the msungu there was a pet monkey. It had been captured down on the Tana River months before and at first was wild and vicious. As time went by it lost much of its wildness and to those it liked was affectionate and friendly. To all others it presented variable moods, sometimes friendly and sometimes unexpectedly and unreasonably hostile.
Theodore, after plundering Metcha, the fertile province at the southern extremity of Lake Tana, destroyed the large and populous town of Zage, and pitched his camp on a small strip of land connecting the promontory of Zage with the mainland.
