Under the spell of this enchantment, the careless boy had passed into the reflective man. Stories are told of knights errant, in the times of Merlin and the good King Arthur, who, while ranging the world in quest of adventures, were bewitched by lovely wood fairies or were lulled into delicious slumber by some syren's song, or were shut up in pleasant durance in enchanted castles.

There were several chests, and five people besides her crew in her. I rubbed my eyes. Could I believe them? Among the people sat Peter Poplar! He sprung up the side, and was soon engaged in shaking hands with several of the Syren's crew. "What! are you pressed, Peter?" said I to him; and in my heart I could not be very sorry to have him with me. "Not exactly that either," he answered.

I was obliged to come here on a little business trip to look after some of my property, and I took you for sweet company, and because I thought we'd give two very dear people who live at the 'Syren's Cave, a great surprise." "Oh, I hope father isn't out on the water," cried Sprite. "Mother will be there, but I want to see them both!"

Enchanted she listened to the syren's call, and ere the echo died within her ear she had devoted her talent to literature, a priestess self-ordained in Arizona's temple of the muses. In the flight of her poetic mind she met his majesty, king of the hills, the mountain-lion at the threshold of his lair and toyed with his cubs, princes and heirs to freedom.

The little man stood listening, the sun on his shoulders, careless of discovery. The voice on the hill, loving and laughing, drew him like a syren's. Was the man mad? He was climbing up out of the creek on to the grass. Kit swept the tamarisk aside, and waved at him furiously. The little man soothed him with mocking hand, and crept on. Kit dared not shout; he could not catch the other.

The syren hooted ominous sound that had started him on many a journey of adventure and the roar of London became mere insignificant clatter of a child's toy carriages. He loved that syren's call; there was something deep and pitiless in it. It drew the wanderers forth from cities everywhere: "Leave your known world behind you, and come with me for better or for worse!

The dangers and difficulties in the undertaking are such as can be sustained by none but the most hardy and accomplished adventurers; and he who begins the journey without the strength of Hercules, or the wisdom and patience of Ulysses, must be destroyed by the wild beasts of the forest, or perish in the storms of the ocean; must suffer transmutation into a beast through the magic power of Circe, or be exiled for life by the detaining charm of Calypso; and in short must descend into Hades, and wander in its darkness, without emerging from thence to the bright regions of the morning, or be ruined by the deadly melody of the Syren's song.

For instance, they were at Tivoli, and in the Syren's grotto, looking up to the foaming fall, which dashes down a rude cleft, formed of fantastically shaped rocks. Immediately below this, the waters make a semicircular bend. On their surface, a mimic rainbow was depicted in vivid colours. "Not for me!" burst forth the mourner, "not for me! does the arc of promise wear those radiant hues.

And if you will meet him at the Syren's Rock to-night, my Lord Richard, he will bring you to those who will conduct you to Sir Guy's brave castle, where he laughs kings and counts to scorn! We have the guard, and will see you safe past the gates of the camp." The way to liberty was open: Richard deliberated.

Fifty times he rode again in his imagination his ride in Saulsby Wood, and he told himself as often that the syren's answer to him, her no, no, no, had been, of all possible answers, the most indefinite and provoking.
