I lowered myself gingerly to the rubbish heap that had been the smooth floor of Thompson's stope; edged to the tunnel entrance; slipped my feet into the toe and heel straps of the snowshoes I had held tightly against me through all the unspeakable, hellish uproar of rending rock, and sprang, sprang out into the sunlight, out on the clear snow, past wounded men, reeling men, dying men, and raced as I never put foot to ground before or since, for Lac Tremblant, glittering clear and free in front of me, that Lac Tremblant I had thought of subconsciously when I carried snowshoes into Collins's cave.
Millie Stope still stood with open, hanging hands, a countenance of expectant dread. Her eyes did not shift from the door as he entered and passed her; her gaze hung starkly on what might emerge from the hall.
He stood without moving, his head thrown back, regarding her with a searching frown. He listened again, unconsciously, and thought he heard the low creaking of a board from within. It could be nothing but the uneasy peregrination of Lichfield Stope. The sound was repeated, grew louder, and the sagging bulk of Nicholas appeared in the doorway.
A day's work, the booming charges, and they returned to the stope to find that the vein had neither lessened nor grown greater. Another day and one after that.
Instead, he merely closed the door behind him, carrying the padlock in with him. As Casey reviewed his situation, being on the butte at all was a risk in itself. One detail more or less could not matter so much. Besides, he was a bold Casey Ryan with two loaded half-sticks of dynamite in his sling. A crude ladder against the wall of a roomy stope beyond the door did not in the least surprise him.
Halvard, in a glistening yellow coat, came close up to him, speaking with the wind whipping the words from his lips. He said: "She's ready, sir." For a moment Woolfolk made no answer; he stood gazing anxiously into the dark that enveloped and hid Millie Stope from him. There was another darkness about her, thicker than the mere night, like a black cerement dropping over her soul.
Then it was that Harry, with a roll of his blue eyes and a funny waggle of his big shoulders, moved down the drift toward the stope, leaving them alone together. Anita Richmond watched after him with a smile, waiting until he was out of hearing distance. Then she turned seriously. "Mother Howard told me where you were," came quietly. "It was the only chance I had to see you.
They're nervy and yet they're careful and so I always hire 'em; but when we were doing this work down in the stope of the Last Chance, they began talking about Mother Trigedgo. It seems she'd told the fortune of a boy or two they were all of them boarding at her house and she was so worried she could hardly cook on account of them working in this mine.
"What is it, Dick?" cried Tom eagerly. "Here's a game!" cried Dick. "Just look!" There was not much on the paper, and that was written in a clumsy printing-letter fashion, beneath a rough sketch, and with another to finish. "Why, here's a hollow turnip and two sticks!" cried Dick aloud; "and and what is it, Tom?" `stope the dyke or yow hev 2 dighe'
We run the tunnel directly under the shaft and then withdraw all the men and machinery from the tunnel, put a six-inch drill into the shaft that makes a hole into the tunnel, and quickly drains the mine. Then we begin to stope out at the lowest level, filling in the waste upward, and taking out only ore to be conveyed to the mill or smelter.
