I shook hands with Dauma immediately, and claimed old acquaintance on the spot! Chief among the many interesting visits which I paid while at Capetown was one to the beautiful towns of Stellenbosch and Wellington. Both are but a short distance from the capital, and connected with it by rail. The former is one of the oldest towns of the colony. Many of the French refugees settled there in 1685.

Some drink beer, and drink a good deal, but Choslullah thought it 'very wrong for Malay people, and not good for Christian people, to be drunk beasties; little wine or beer good for Christians, but not too plenty much. I gave him ten shillings for himself, at which he was enchanted, and again begged me to write to his master for him when I wanted to leave Caledon, and to be sure to say, 'Mind send same coachman. He planned to drive me back through Worcester, Burnt Vley, Paarl, and Stellenbosch a longer round; but he could do it in three days well, so as 'not cost Missus more money', and see a different country.

But how I enjoyed that dinner! Had there been many drivers present, the management would have been seriously embarrassed that evening. Wildly varying rumours of our future used to abound, but on March 14, a sudden order came to raise camp, and march to Stellenbosch. Teams were harnessed and hooked in, stores packed in the buck waggons, tents struck, and at twelve we were ready.

He was an auctioneer and shipping agent, and during his absence his business was annexed by a rival. One British Colonial, who held office at Stellenbosch, said to one family, without even making an inquiry as to their conduct, "You are rebels and I will take your mules" which was done. The mules were afterwards sold to the Commissariat Department by the man who had commandeered them.

Abdul Jemaalee's tisanne, and a banana which he gave me each time I went to his shop, are the sole offer of 'Won't you take something? or even the sole attempt at a civility that I have received, except from the J-s, who, are very civil and kind. When I have done my visit to Simon's Bay, I will go 'up country', to Stellenbosch, Paarl and Worcester, perhaps.

A new South African college had been erected; a library which might now stand in the front rank of the world's libraries had been collected; the freedom of the press had been largely taken advantage of, and education generally was being prosecuted with a degree of rigour that argued well for the future of the colony especially in Stellenbosch, Wellington, and neighbouring places.

In another direction the railway runs by Stellenbosch and the Paarl to Wellington and Worcester. It may surprise some people to be told that there is a mine a rich and prolific mine at Capetown. Nevertheless, such is undoubtedly the case. This mine is more extensive and valuable than any of the diamond or gold mines of the Orange River or the Transvaal.

But they built themselves houses, and they supplied the Dutch East India Company with food and water, gradually budding off little townlets, Wynberg, Stellenbosch, and pushing their settlements up the long slopes which lead to that great central plateau which extends for 1,500 miles from the edge of the Karoo to the Valley of the Zambesi.

The food was good and plentiful, and so was the Hollands, or Squareface as they call it now, to say nothing of the Constantia and peach-brandy which had been sent to me many years before by a cousin who lived at Stellenbosch; and yet that meal was not as cheerful as it might have been.

I've commanded a district in India, and I give you my word the native troops are splendid men. "'Oh, I should not mind them at Worcester, says Adrian. 'I would sell you forage for them at Worcester yes, and Paarl and Stellenbosch; but Almighty! he says, 'must I stay with Cronje till you have taught half a million of these stupid boys to ride? I shall be an old man.
