If we begin pitying ourselves and saying, “Oh, it is too bad! it is just too bad!” we shall only feel the more keenly the hurt; and the more we cultivate the habit of self-pity, the more power it exercises over us. Some people have so yielded to the power of self-pity that whole days are darkened by little trifling disappointments that they ought to throw off in a few minutes.
But the abandonment to sensibility, the absorption in self-pity and the sentiment of passion, are carried by Propertius to a far greater length. The abasement of a line like Sis quodcunque voles, non aliena tamen, is in the strongest possible contrast to that powerful passion which fills the poetry of Catullus, or to the romantic tenderness of the Eclogues; and in the extraordinary couplet
He regretted his lost sleep less now and cursed no more, though he thought of the ride up into the mountains with a good deal of self-pity. It was no joke to be a badly paid Sicilian doctor, he thought, as he tugged at his trousers buttons, and fastened the white front that covered the breast of his flannel shirt, and adjusted the cuffs which he took out of a small drawer.
And after all these centuries she felt drawn near to Jacob in the tender realization of a common humanity, and often repeated his despairing words, "I shall go down into the grave unto my son mourning." Then her heart was pierced with self-pity for the contrast of his gratuitous affliction with her hopeless grief.
"Anna, Anna, to think of our coming to this!" she would wail a dozen times a day or, "Anna, I can't stand it another minute," and she would burst into paroxysms of grief, from which nothing could arouse her, and utterly exhausted by her own emotions, which were chiefly regret and self-pity, she would sink off to sleep.
The sigh that shivered through her sprang from a deeper source than mere self-pity. Rattle of rickshaw wheels, puffing and grunting of jhampannis, heralded the return of her mother, who had been out paying a round of preliminary calls.
He sank down in his chair, resting his chin in his hand mere sensation, without thought, holding him. Then something like a bereaved affection and self-pity swept over him. "She needn't have gone away," he said. "I'd have got something." He sat a long while without rocking, and added quite clearly, out loud: "I tried, didn't I?" At midnight he was still rocking, staring at the floor.
The man's self-pity and self-condemnation; his hints that certain people wished to do him harm; the curious episode of the shadows on the blind these things engaged the curiosity of Denzil in no ordinary degree; and he could not but admit to himself that it would greatly ease his mind to arrive at some reasonable explanation of Berwin's eccentricities.
It was with a very heavy heart that he went to his work that day; but he had to go, for he was helping one of the neighbors to thresh, and every dry day was precious, and every man was needed. All day long Evelyn went about the house trying to justify herself. A great wave of self-pity seemed to be engulfing her and blotting out every worthier feeling.
Beside it lay some slovenly manuscripts of Levasseur's. He could see the corners of Miss Bremerton's mouth go up as she looked it through. Well, now he was to be left to Levasseur's tender mercies after all he had taught her! And the accounts, and the estate, and these infernal rations, that no human being could understand! The Squire's self-pity rose upon him like a flood.
