Even if one never used his rifle one would still enjoy life on safari. Safari is an Arabic word meaning expedition as it is understood in that country. If you go on any sort of a trip you are on safari. It need not be a shooting trip. Of course everybody who has read the magazines of the last year has been more or less familiarized with African hunting.
"Whoever it is will be a nuisance a damn nuisance!" he concluded. "N'dio, bwana," came Mali-ya-bwana's cheerful response to this speech in a language strange to him. "You have asked a true question," Kingozi shifted to Swahili. "Where is potio to be had for so large a safari? Trouble much trouble!" He arose from the flat stone. "We will go and talk with this safari."
"You!" said he suddenly, pointing his forefinger at the man in irons. "You have disobeyed my orders. You are no longer an askari. You are a common porter, and from now on will carry a load. It is not my custom to use kiboko on askaris; but a common porter can eat kiboko, and Mali-ya- bwana, my headman of safari, will give you twenty-five lashes. Bassi!"
"Yes, bwana, and then?" "This is the most difficult. You must get hold of Bwana Nyele, and you must tie him fast also, and keep him from his safari. He is a m'zungu , yes but he is a Duyche, and my enemy, and these things are right, because I command it." "Yes, bwana." "Then you must keep Bwana Nyele and these two shenzis close in camp, hidden where their safari cannot find them.
Our boys were completely scandalized at the price she paid for it, so I fear the wily savage got ahead of her. About the middle of the afternoon we sat down to wait for the safari to catch up. It would never do to cheat our boys out of their anticipated grand entrance to the Government post at Meru.
It is a very large safari with many loads," she added. Kingozi's face turned gray. He dropped his face into his hands. Gently she laid her hand on his bowed head. Thus they waited, while the safari, evidently under local guidance, plunged into some hidden path through the papyrus, and so disappeared.
We had been on the trail about an hour and a half when a shot was heard off to our left; At first we thought it was our Spanish friends, but a few moments later we came to a point where we could see, about a mile away, a long string of porters winding along in the direction from which we came, it was plainly a much larger safari than the Spanish one, and we at once concluded that it was Colonel Roosevelt's.
Akeley led our safari late in October to try again for elephants on the old familiar stamping ground. We pitched our camp in a lovely spot where one of his camps had stood three years before, just at the edge of the thick bush and on the upper edge of the shambas. News travels quickly in this country, and in a short time many of his old Kikuyu friends were at our camping place.
Now encircling the bubble tents and the space ship was a force field: routine protection of a safari camp on a strange world and one Hume had set as a matter of course. He stood for a long moment staring through that invisible barrier toward the direction of the wood. It was a dark night, there were scudding clouds to hide the stars, which meant rain probably before morning.
Strange, too, it seemed to see tall trees with leaves three or four feet long and half as many wide. We were riding a mile or so ahead of the safari. At first we were accompanied only by our gunbearers and syces. Before long, however, we began to accumulate a following. This consisted at first of a very wonderful young man, probably a chief's son.
