Mittelstedt proposes “Gefühlvolle Reisen,” “Reisen fürs Herz,” “Philosophische Reisen,” and then condemns his own suggestions as indeterminate and forced.
"Did he say he would come back?" A knock at the door arrested the answer, and a huge, wide, broad-faced German entered diffidently. The Doctor recognized Reisen. The visitor took off his flour-dusted hat and bowed with great deference. "Toc-tor," he softly drawled, "I yoost taught I trop in on you to say a verte to you apowt teh chung yentleman vot you hef rickomendet to me."
Elphinstone's Account of Caubul and its Dependencies. 1815. 4to. The interest and value of this work arises more from the subject of it, than from the manner in which it is executed; respecting such countries, however, as Caubul, and others as little known and remote, we are glad of all accessions of information. Reisen durch Siberien, 1733-1743. Von J.G. Gmelin. Gott. 4 vols. 8vo.
In the second edition of the first volume the author confesses that the title only is derived from Yorick, and states that he was forced to this misuse because no one at that time cared to read anything but “Empfindsame Reisen.” It is also to be noted that the description beneath the title, “von einem deutschen Yorick angestellt,” is omitted after the first volume.
A minute later he drew from his breast-pocket a small, thick letter stripped of its envelope, and handed it to the Doctor, who put it into his pocket, neither of them speaking. The action showed practice. Reisen winked one eye laboriously at the Doctor and chuckled.
This work is swelled beyond all due proportion with political disquisitions; but though bold and severe, it is a just picture. Italien und Deutschland. Von C.P. Moritz. Berlin, 1790. Manners, literature, and arts are the topics of this work. The same author published "Travels of a German in England." Reisen durch Deutschland, Danemarck, Schweden, Italien, 1797 99. Von Kuttner. Leip. 4 vols. 8vo.
He was earnestly conversing with and bending over a small, alert fellow, in a rakish beaver and very smart coat, with the blue flowers of modesty bunched saucily in one button-hole. Almost at the same moment Reisen saw the Doctor.
The restaurateur turned to his head-waiter, stuck his tongue in his cheek, and pulled down the lower lid of an eye with his forefinger. He meant to say he had been lying for the pure fun of it. When Dr. Sevier came that afternoon to see Reisen of whom there was now but little left, and that little unable to leave the bed Richling took occasion to raise the subject that had entangled his fancy.
"Oh!" exclaimed Richling, "he can't do that! He should have asked my consent." "I suppose he knew he wouldn't get it. He's a cunning simpleton." "But, Doctor, if you knew this" Richling ceased. "Six months ago. Why didn't I tell you?" said the physician. "I thought I would, Richling, though Reisen bade me not, when he told me; I made no promise.
