Thou wilt be sure I was very bold to set off quite alone except the driver, but it proved far easier than I had anticipated. John Yeardley's residence was at Friedensthal, a hamlet about a mile from the town of Pyrmont. In a letter to his brother he thus describes the situation of the place, and his own comfortable accommodation:
I take it for granted, that it is to be had, or at least borrowed, at Hamburg, or I would send it to you. I hope you drink the Pyrmont waters every morning. The health of the mind depends so much upon the health of the body, that the latter deserves the utmost attention, independently of the senses. God send you a very great share of both! Adieu. From Brunswick, in passing, he had brought with him his Brother-in-law the reigning Duke; Rothenburg was there, and Brother Henri; D'Arget expressly; Flute-player Quanz withal, and various musical people: "in all, a train of above sixty persons." I notice also that Prince Wilhelm of Hessen was in Pyrmont at the time. That is the Pyrmont Journey.
The two friends travelled together to Minden, where they parted, and John Yeardley returned to Pyrmont by Bielefeld. The neighborhood of this town, he says, is remarkably fine. There is a very high hill, partly formed by nature, and partly by art, from which we can see quite round, without any interruption, even into Holland.
An early and persistent version of the genesis of the travels was that they took their origin from the rivalry in fabulous tales of three accomplished students at Goettingen University, Buerger, Kaestner, and Lichtenberg; another ran that Gottfried August Buerger, the German poet and author of "Lenore," had at a later stage of his career met Baron Munchausen in Pyrmont and taken down the stories from his own lips.

It did seem strange for me to be sitting on the deck of the 'Pyrmont, in the middle of the Atlantic, talking with these shipwrecked ladies about the last new novel!
