He moved to go, one hand on Gargoyle's unresponsive shoulder, when the office door swung open. "Now this is real trouble," laughed a woman's fresh, deep-chested voice. "Doctor Mach, it means using one of your tall measuring-glasses or permitting these lovely things to wilt; some one has inundated us with flowers. I've already filled one bath-tub; I've even used the buckets in the operating-room."
'I'm rare an' lucky that it's to be ma richt leg an' no the left, for that richt shank o' mine was aye a wee thing crookit at the knee, and didna dae credit tae the airchitecture o' tither ane. Thus, amid the rough encouragement of his fellows, and by no means unconscious of the dignity of his position, the Highland soldier was taken away to the operating-room.
The town was in a state of excitement until nightfall, and the people who had tickets to view the Fisherman's Palace passed in a steady and orderly procession over the broad deck; through the smart main ward with its polished oak floor; through the operating-room, and through the comfortable, unostentatious club-room, which had been designed by Lewis Ferrier.
Her cheek-bones stood out more prominently than I had thought cheek-bones capable of doing. Her mouth not quite a bad one, by the way opened wider than any within my experience; and her teeth, white and exposed, were suggestive of a set of tombstones planted outside a stonemason's shop, or an upper and lower set exhibited at the entrance to a dentist's operating-room.
"Who is this at the 'phone?" "That doesn't matter. Le Moyne's my name. Get the message to Dr. Ed Wilson at once. We are starting to the city." "Tell me again. I mustn't make a mess of this." "Dr. Wilson, the surgeon, has been shot," came slowly and distinctly. "Get the staff there and have a room ready. Get the operating-room ready, too." The Lamb wakened then, and roused the house.
The kitchen Sister stayed up all night so that each man should have some hot soup on arrival, and all the other Sisters were at their posts. He was then dressed in a clean cotton shirt and trousers and lifted into bed, either to enjoy a bowl of hot soup, or, if the case was urgent, to be taken off in his turn to the operating-room.
"We treat wounds that are suppurating here," he said pleasantly. "Our real operating-room is in the other house, and is much better fitted up. This being the only hospital in the country I have all the operations to perform, generally one a day." Then we went into the Röntgen room. The X rays, the doctor informed us, was very useful in locating bullets.
"You had been very successful." She did not look up. "Well, I had and I hadn't. I'm not going to worry you about that. My offer is this: We'll just try to forget about about Schwitter's and all the rest, and if I go back I'll take you on in the operating-room." "You sent me away once!" "Well, I can ask you to come back, can't I?" He smiled at her encouragingly.
Sometimes he only stayed a few minutes, but often he would spend an hour or so, trying to dispel the clouds of gloom and despondency that were hanging over her. Corydon told him of her vision in the operating-room, and strange to say he declared that he had known it all; also he said that he had helped her to fight her way back to life.
The first week was one long nightmare with the awful struggle for the Russian names of dressings and instruments and with their different methods of working, but after that I settled down very happily. Sister G. was in the operating-room on the next floor, and she, too, found that first week a great strain.
