Carlotta Harrison was off duty, ill. She had been ailing for a month, and now she was down with a temperature. As the Head went toward Sidney's ward, her busy mind was playing her nurses in their wards like pieces on a checkerboard. Sidney went into the operating-room that afternoon.
In the bungalows across the road are beds for the patients who are to be kept for a time before being transferred to the hospitals in the town. In one bungalow an operating-room has been installed, in another are the bathing arrangements for the newcomers from the trenches.
Sidney went into the operating-room late in the spring as the result of a conversation between the younger Wilson and the Head. "When are you going to put my protegee into the operating-room?" asked Wilson, meeting Miss Gregg in a corridor one bright, spring afternoon. "That usually comes in the second year, Dr. Wilson." He smiled down at her. "That isn't a rule, is it?" "Not exactly.
Then I drove a bit farther on my way, and off across a field I saw the walls of a great hospital. It was an evacuation hospital, and I had visited in its wards many times after a raid, when hundreds of our boys had been brought in every night and day, with four shifts of doctors kept busy day and night in the operating-room caring for them.
"Gas," said my Russian companion briefly. "We will stay here until it is over." Though we must have been nearly a mile behind the firing-line, the air was filled with a sweetish, sickish smell which suggested both the operating-room and the laboratory.
"Now," concluded Kennedy solemnly as if to force the last secret from the wildly beating heart of some one in the room, "it is my belief that the person who had access to the operating-room of the Novella was a person whose nerves were run down, and in addition to any other treatment that person was familiar with the ether phosphore.
Prevention of Operation Shock. In the preparation of a patient for operation, drastic purgation and prolonged fasting must be avoided, and about half an hour before a severe operation a pint of saline solution should be slowly introduced into the rectum; this is repeated, if necessary, during the operation, and at its conclusion. The operating-room must be warm not less than 70°
Sidney found her tossing restlessly on her high white bed, and put her cool hand over Carlotta's hot one. "Did you send for me?" "Hours ago." Then, seeing her operating-room uniform: "You've been THERE, have you?" "Is there anything I can do, Carlotta?" Excitement had dyed Sidney's cheeks with color and made her eyes luminous. The girl in the bed eyed her, and then abruptly drew her hand away.
His place of business or whatever high-class dentists choose to call it in Crown Square was quite ready for him when he arrived on the Friday night: specimen "uppers" and "lowers" and odd teeth shining in their glass case, the new black-and-gold door-plate on the door, and the electric filing apparatus which he had purchased, in the operating-room. Nothing lacked there.
The odd coincidence of their paths crossing again troubled him. Carlotta Harrison was well again, and back on duty. Luckily for Sidney, her three months' service in the operating-room kept them apart. For Carlotta was now not merely jealous. She found herself neglected, ignored. It ate her like a fever. But she did not yet suspect an engagement.
