At one point near its head it approaches so near to De Chelly that but a few feet of rock separate them. On the western side of the mountains there are a number of small perennial streams fed by springs on the upper slopes. Several of these meet in the upper part of De Chelly, others in Del Muerto, and in the upper parts of these canyons there is generally water.

Beyond this point they are rare, as the areas of cultivable land become scarce. A similar distribution prevails in Del Muerto. The character of the site occupied by a ruin is a very important feature where the response to the physical environment is as ready and complete as it is in the ancient pueblo region.

In 1882 Bancroft could find no better or fuller description than Simpson's, which he uses fully, and reproduces also Simpson's (Kern's) illustration. In the same year investigation by the assistants of the Bureau of Ethnology was commenced. Colonel James Stevenson and a party visited the canyon, and a considerable amount of data was obtained. In all, 46 ruins were visited, 17 of which were in Del Muerto; and sketches, ground plans, and photographs were obtained. The report of the Bureau for that year contains an account of this expedition, including a short description of a large ruin in Del Muerto, subsequently known as Mummy Cave. A

A boat was lowered, and a single man sculled it ashore; then lifting out a small cask and bag, he placed them high on the sands and looked around. Spying the sleeping man, half immersed now, he approached and felt of the damp clothing and equally damp face. Not noticing that he breathed softly, the man crossed himself, then moved quickly and nervously toward his boat, muttering, "Muerto, muerto!"

Chiquito, the old gray parrot, raised his head from her shoulder, where he had been quietly dozing, and flapped his wings, and cried aloud: "Viva Cuba Libre! viva Garcia! viva Gomez! a muerto Espana!" On arriving at the last camping-ground before entering upon the journada, all the animals should be as well rested and refreshed as possible.

I remembered hearing of a spring, the Ojo del Muerto, that was said to lie westward of the trail. Sometimes there was water in the spring. On other occasions travellers had reached it only to find the fountain dried up, and leave their bones upon its banks. So ran the tales in Socorro. I headed my horse westward. I would seek the spring, and, should I fail to find it, push on to the river.

The bearded man caught it by the lantern-light, and tethered the San Marco to her place. Then he asked, in a deep voice: "Has traido al Doctor?" "Si, si!" answered Sparicio... "Y el viejo?" "Aye! pobre!" responded Feliu, "hace tres dias que esta muerto." Henry Edwards was dead!
