"Nay, Jack, leave thee!" he cried. "That were a knave's trick, to be sure, when ye risked a shot and a ducking, ay, and a drowning too, to save my life. Drowning, in sooth; for why I did not pull you in along with me, the saints alone can tell!" "Nay," said Matcham, "I would 'a' saved us both, good Dick, for I can swim." "Can ye so?" cried Dick, with open eyes.
Presently, however, the ground began to rise, which showed him he was still in the right way, and soon after they came forth upon a slope of solid turf, where elms began to mingle with the willows. But here Matcham, who had been dragging far into the rear, threw himself fairly down. "Leave me, Dick!" he cried, pantingly; "I can no more." Dick turned, and came back to where his companion lay.
But what strikes me as most probable and it's really, I'm bound to say, quite amiable of him is that he has declined to leave Aunt Maud, as I've been so ready to do, to spend her Christmas alone. If moreover he has given up Matcham for her it's a procédé that won't please her less. It's small wonder therefore that she insists, on a dull day, in driving him about.
Some one from the upper quarters of the wood, perhaps the very sentinel they saw posted in the fir, had shot an arrow at the chimney-top. Matcham could not restrain a little cry, which he instantly stifled, and even Dick started with surprise, and dropped the windac from his fingers. But to the fellows on the lawn, this shaft was an expected signal.
"Goody," he said, "where is Master Matcham, I prithee? I saw ye go in with him when we arrived." The old woman laughed aloud. "Ah, Master Dick," she said, "y' have a famous bright eye in your head, to be sure!" and laughed again. "Nay, but where is he, indeed?" persisted Dick. "Ye will never see him more," she returned "never. It is sure."
She had seen it enough for her temporary clearness and her next movement seen it as it showed during the stare of surprise that followed his entrance. Then it was that she knew how hugely expert she had been made, for judging it quickly, by that vision of it, indelibly registered for reference, that had flashed a light into her troubled soul the night of his late return from Matcham.
For myself, I came sound to Shoreby, and being mindful of the Black Arrow, got me this gown and bell, and came softly by the path for the Moat House. There is no disguise to be compared with it; the jingle of this bell would scare me the stoutest outlaw in the forest; they would all turn pale to hear it. At length I came by you and Matcham.
It had come out for him before anything else, and so abruptly that this almost needed an explanation. Then the abruptness itself had appeared to explain which had introduced, in turn, a slight awkwardness. "Do you know that they're not, after all, going to Matcham; so that, if they don't if, at least, Maggie doesn't you won't, I suppose, go by yourself?"
Six other guests only, in addition to the host and the hostess of Matcham, made up the company, and each of these persons had for Maggie the interest of an attested connection with the Easter revels at that visionary house.
She had said "Don't you see?" on purpose, and was to feel the next moment that it had acted. "These three months'?" the Prince asked. "Counting from the night you came home so late from Matcham. Counting from the hours you spent with Charlotte at Gloucester; your visit to the cathedral which you won't have forgotten describing to me in so much detail. For that was the beginning of my being sure.
