"And that's my seal-pick many a seal have I killed with that. That there's the portrait of the True Love, three-masted schooner, built at Littlehampton by Harvey. Sailed second mate, first mate, and master in her, I did. Then she was sold; and a lubber went and and threw her on the Kentish Knock in a south-easterly gale. She was a pretty ship!
As if he had been an enchanter, it had come into being at the word upon his lips. Had he other such words? Deep within her she felt something her soul, herself, she knew not what thrill and turn over and settle again.... "The sea," she repeated in a low voice. "Yes, that's what you want to set you up rather! Do you remember that fortnight at Littlehampton, you and me and your Aunt? Jolly that was!
"Take the kids to Littlehampton in the summer; give yourselves a change. Your mother'll go with you, I daresay." "How jolly!" He took her seriously. He seemed so densely absorbed in what was coming to him that he only just heard her reply. He said absently: "I hope it will be; look after yourselves."
Of course, we've been nearly every year to the same rooms at Littlehampton, but with children it's different. You can hardly call it a holiday." "You can't, I should think." She smiled seriously and passed it by. "He was like a schoolboy let out of school," she said with a sudden jerkiness, "he was so pleased. Poor boy!
At last they got out of the orchards and on to a sort of road, very rough, and not at all like the roads you are used to. It had cypress trees and acacia trees along it, and a sort of hedge of tamarisks, like those you see on the road between Nice and Cannes, or near Littlehampton, if you've only been as far as that. And now in front of them they could see a great mass of buildings.
Then the journalist sends off his copy and turns his attention to the enigma of whether a brother should commandeer a sister's necklace because the sister pinched him at Littlehampton. That is the first scene; that is how an article is really written. The scene now changes to the newspaper office.
The Littlehampton season, so far as visitors were concerned, was summer, and from the middle of May onward various ladies of ornamental and interesting aspect would make their appearance on the pavement of Beach Terrace, or, seen on the balconies of houses which had just unclosed their shutters, would trouble and enliven the atmosphere with suggestions of vague adventures.
He had had a very important case in the Courts just then, and it was out of the question that he should go with his wife to Littlehampton for the change of air, the few weeks by the sea, that had been ordered by her good, careful doctor. And then at the last moment Frank had suddenly jumped into the railway carriage without a ticket, and had gone along with her part of the way!
The orders, which were of course secret, bore date the 3rd of July 1779, and were directed to Capt. Alms, who, as regulating officer at Shoreham, was likewise in charge of the gang at Newhaven under Lieut. Bradley, and of the gang at Littlehampton under Lieut. Breedon. At Shoreham there was also a tender, manned by an able crew.
Littlehampton shows few traces of its antiquity, the church was rebuilt in the last century and is of no interest, but there are many good walks in the neighbourhood and the immediate country is beautifully wooded, with the distant Downs as an occasional background.
