At last the two men who had taken the first watch came back, reporting that they had seen nothing; then Potto Jumbo, who had been lying down snoring loudly, started up, and with Roger Trew went down to the shore. The second part of the night appeared even longer than the first. Still I knew that it would have an end. At length the streaks of early dawn appeared in the eastern sky.

Belamour in the dark was a very different matter, and she had probably had an escape from much awkwardness. Molly received her with her favourite exclamation: "Lawk, miss, and who do you think have been here?" "Jumbo told me, Molly." "Ain't he a perfect pictur of a man? And such a gentleman!

That morning he, Oliver, and I, with Potto Jumbo, went down to the beach to procure shell-fish. We had been some time on the rocks, when I saw an object floating in towards the shore. As it drew nearer, I discovered to my satisfaction that it was the empty shell of a nautilus. In my eagerness I was about to throw off my clothes and jump in to fetch it, when Potto Jumbo drew me back.

George Moore, coming up out of the forec's'le to dump over some scraps, spied one. "The Mary Grace Adams," he sang out, "the shortest forem'st out of Gloucester. She must've been well inside when she started to get in at this time. Slow man, but she is slow, that one." "Yes, that's the old girl, and behind her is the Dreamer Charlie Green black mast-heads and two patches on her jumbo.

Joe's momentum carried him clear across the room. Sam laughed. "Missed that one, Jumbo," he taunted. "Try another." Joe rushed back and swung again. Once more Sam ducked, this time as he went under Joe's arm, contriving to land an upper-cut, not of sufficient force to really shake the mountain, but driving him mad with rage. Joe wheeled about, both arms going like flails.

"Ah! dat one fine country, only little too hot sometimes for lily-white skins;" and Potto Jumbo grinned from ear to ear, as if congratulating himself that his own dark covering was impervious to the sun's rays of that or any other region. Potto Jumbo's chief friend was an English seaman Roger Trew by name.

"It seems to me more like yours, sir," rejoined the youth; but at the hall door, with all his native grace, he turned and gave his welcome, kissing Betty on the cheek with the grave ceremony of the host, and lamenting, poor fellow, that he stood alone without his bride to receive them. "Is that Jumbo?" asked Betty. "I must thank him for all his kind service to my dear sister."

As their arms had been released, as soon as they had had their supper, being pretty well tired with the exertions which they had made the previous night, they lay down, and in spite of the danger they considered the ship was in. After some time Roger woke, and going to the door of the cabin, found to his surprise that Jumbo had not locked it.

Roger was short and stout, with wonderfully long arms, and of immense strength; but he never put it forth except in the way of duty, and was on ordinary occasions as mild and gentle as a lamb. I believe Potto Jumbo admired him because he had the power of knocking any man down on board who might offend him, and yet did not use it.

"I'll go, Chief, wommetoo," puts in jumbo Lee, all in a huddle of words. "Ije slivsnot. Aw ri. Mon Jim. Shoonmeansmore of 'em go gitth'otherreel." Jumbo isn't a member of the fire department, though he is wild to join. He isn't old enough. He is six feet one inch, weighs 180, and won't be sixteen till the 5th of next February. Nobody ever saw him when he wasn't eating.
