The peculiar features of our present St. Mark are known to be extremely few, yet several of these are also found in the Clementine Homilies. Matt. xxii. 32. Mark xii. 27. Luke xx. 38. Clem. Hom. iii. 55. In the introduction to the Eschatological discourse the Clementines approach more nearly to St. But there are two stronger cases than these.

The gigantic and magnanimous John Frederic, surprised at his devotions in the church, fled in dismay, leaving his boots behind him, which for their superhuman size, were ridiculously said afterwards to be treasured among the trophies of the Toledo house. Brantome, Hom.

But the night was dark, and I could see only two vague shadows flitting across the quay. I heard the vast deep hom of the city rising up about me; and I suddenly felt a great sinking at my heart. Poor child! December 15. The King of Thule kept a goblet of gold which his dying mistress had bequeathed him as a souvenir.

I must confess to my surprise that such an objection could be made by an experienced critic. Clem. Hom. xix. 20. Mark iv. 34. When we compare the synopsis of St. Mark and St. Matthew together we should be inclined to set this down as a very decided instance of quotation from the former. The coincidence of language is very marked. With the third Gospel also there are coincidences.

If Hom. xvi and Hom. xviii had been lost, there would have been no evidence that the author was acquainted with any book of the Old Testament besides the Pentateuch; and, if the five Homilies had been lost, there would have been nothing to show that he was acquainted with the Old Testament at all.

Nay some have been so curious as to note that the times when the stroke or percussion of an envious eye doth most hurt, are, when the party envied is beheld in glory or triumph; for that sets an edge upon Envy; And besides, at such times, the spirits of the persons envied do come forth most into the outward parts, and so meet the blow. Hom.

It is unlikely that these passages, which are wanting in all our extant Gospels, should have had any other source than our third Synoptic. We have to add to these another class of peculiarities which occur in places where the synoptic parallel has been preserved. Thus in the Sermon on the Mount we find the following: Matt. vii. 21. Clem. Hom. viii. 7. Luke, vi. 46.

"Com here, Ali; yoo most 'xplain de flowers me bring hom yiserday." The polite Moor at once followed the pretty Italian, leaving Ted Flaggan with her sister. "You'll excuse me, ma'am, if I bids you raither an abrup' good marnin'. It's business I have on me hands that won't kape nohow."

Dimmerly started out of his sleep, with a snort like the blast of a ram's hom before Jericho, and, pushing his gold spectacles to the top of his bald head, stared in bewilderment at the forms convulsed with merriment around him. Even Hemstead joined in the laugh, though inwardly inclined to anathematize his big feet.

It evinces the truth of what Chrysostom, two centuries afterwards, observed, that "the Gospels, when written, were not hidden in a corner or buried in obscurity, but they were made known to all the world, before enemies as well as others, even as they are now." Hom.
