Did not the Maeterlinck of 'Pelleas and Melisande' seem to be outside life? and now he has so influenced other writers, he has been so much written about, he has been associated with so much celebrated music, he has been talked about by so many charming ladies, that he is less a vapour than that Dumas fils who wrote of such a living Paris.

I am sorry, Messieurs, to break up so romantic a plan, savouring of the fine days of the quatre fils Aymon, but I must stand up for the claims of the diocese and the parish. 'Madame, he said, 'we are disconcerted, but I shall still put my trust in the truth that beauty ever pardons the efforts of love.

He then briefly noted what these changes are, and went on to describe the "steam desilverizing process," as used in the works of the writer's firm, and in other works licensed by them, which process is the invention of Messrs. Luce Fils et Rozan, of Marseilles.

In the dictionary it figures, inter alia, as "a kind of light silken stuff." And, as Dumas fils sagely sums it up in "Le Demi-Monde": "Dans le mariage, quand l'amour existe, l'habitude le tue, et quand il n'existe pas elle le fait naitre." It was with melancholy amusement that I read in the scientific journals that sewer-gas was comparatively innocuous.

Yet some faint hopes still lingered in the old man's breast. 'Gusman fut inhumain, he admitted, 'je le sais, j'en frémis; Mais il est ton époux, il t'aime, il est mon fils: Son âme

Subsequently, however, after the death of her father, the family of Mademoiselle de Mercoeur had objected to the alliance, and it had required all the authority of Henry to compel its accomplishment. Davila, Hist. of Modern Europe, London, 1794, book xv. vol. iii. p. 49. Richelieu, Hist. de la Mère et du Fils, vol. i. pp. 260-277. Mézeray, vol. xi. pp. 55-67. Le Vassor, vol. i. pp. 253-261.

Can we stop? It's impossible. We must go on till we've thrown them out. It is dreadful, but what would you have? Ah! Our son he was so promising!" And the mother, weeping over the tin-tacks, would make the neatest little parcel of them, murmuring out of her tears: "Il faut que ça finisse; mais la France il ne faut pas que la France Nos chers fils auraient été tués pour rien!" Poor souls!

It was not considered worth while even to watch him. Should he escape, unarmed as he was, sure death by starvation awaited him in the land of dread. As he entered the settlement he struck up an air. "Le fils du roi s'en va chassant, En roulant ma boule, Avec son grand fusil d'argent, Rouli roulant, ma boule roulant."

And the people, frantic with ardour and desire, answered him in a voice of thunder: "Ayez pitié de nous! ayez pitié de nous!" And now up the steps came the grave group to where Jesus would at least bless His own, though He would not heal them; and the priest in the midst, with one last cry, gave glory to Him who must be served through whatever misery: "Hosanna! Hosanna au Fils de David!"

Every day put a new row of iron curtains between the window panes, until at the end of the twelfth day the city seemed as dismal as London on a Sunday, or as though all the shops were closed for a public funeral. Scraps of paper were pasted on the barred-up fronts. "Le magasin est ferme a cause de la mobilisation." "M. Jean Cochin et quatre fils sont au front des armees."
